Hey Everyone,

I recently (2 days ago) took in a Haitian female (epicrates striatus striatus) and jeff had very kindly given me some info on this snake, and invited me to post over here

It seems that very few people keep these, although over the past few days I have no idea why, as my new female "Claudia" seems to be very sweet tempered, and eats very well.

Here are a couple of pics of my new baby (not really a baby, we measured her at 38 inches)

Enjoy,

Leyla x

Welcome to the forum and that's a beauty!!! We don't often see subspecies other than mostly BRB and some CRB, they are just not that common. Would love if you can post up pics from time to time so we (I) can enjoy from afar!!!

Welcome to the forum!

Your snake brings back memories! About 20 years ago, I ended up with one that looked a whole lot like that. Same shape, same width, dropped off at the pet shop I managed as a "Hatian tree boa". I gave the guy $40 for it and took it home. What a wonderful snake, sweet disposition, active and very pretty. There was zero info available on her so I kept her in a 40 gallon "vivarium" with some places to climb and fed her mice, finches and parakeets.

In all honesty, I was never quite convinced mine was a Hatian, she was the same pattern, but quite a bit darker with a more deep violet appearance to her than a rusty appearance. The pattern was the same though. Does your girl have a black mouth? Mine's mouth was jet black everywhere a BRB's mouth is pink. She also had longer curved teeth than normal.

I hope you enjoy her as much as I enjoyed mine, she was definitely one of my favorite snakes of all time.

Here a few introductory pics of West Indian Epicrates for you. Hope you enjoy....TC

herpsltd May 13, 2008 02:43 PM

The first pic is of a Fords Boa breeding [E. fordi], second and third pic is a Jamaican Boas breeding and a juvenile [E. subflavus], fourth pic is a Vine Boa [E. gracilis]. I'll post more pics if interested as I breed many species of West Indian boids....TC

Those are just beautiful snakes. I will need to procure some of those. Are they hard to get ? (as in endangered/protected)

Thanks for posting those pics. Now there's a specie of boa I am surprised you don't see more of!!!!

Frank you would have to obtain an endangered species permit on the Jamaicans. I sell out QUICK right here in Fl. Everyone likes them and you just CAN'T find them for sale...thanks

That is what I figured thanks!!

Tom,
....The first time I saw Jamaican Boas was at your old place in Lake Panasoffkee. Those big adults you had were super impressive. I should have bought some from you then.

Beautiful snakes! I'd love to see lots more pix, they're all stunning, especially the Jamaican.

Does the Hatian come in a darker blue/purple base color similar to the back half of the Jamaican? The snake I had was shaped and patterend exactly like the OP's snake, but colored like the back half of your Jamaican. The inside of the mouth was black, I distinctly remember that as being unusual. I truly enjoyed that snake, it was very even tempered, I dont recall it ever offering to strike. I'd love to have another some day if I could figure out exactly what it was. We were told Hatian, but the only pix I've found online are of the rust colored animals.

In fact here's a few more:

These are the Puerto Rican Boa [E. inornatus] and a Haitian Boa [E. s. striatus].....TC

Tom,

Thanks for the pics, great stuff. I really like the red color
on that Haitian! Is that the typical color?

Thanks,
Ed

No that is extremely unusual. This type is only found at higher altitudes in only specific areas in Hispanola....TC

My girl has patches of the brick red looking color all the way down her length, I hope it comes out more as she grows :D Looking forward to her shedding in the next few weeks, I will take some pics.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the very warm welcome

I appreciate the photos too, now I am 100% sure she is a haitian. I was starting to wonder, as she is so sweet tempered and not a picky eater in any way. I actually had someone on another forum tell me that they were surprised that she hadn't tried to kill me yet!! He couldn't be further from the truth

Someone had asked earlier what color her mouth is....I took a better pic of her head for you....her mouth is pretty light colored.

I think I got pretty lucky with her, she cost me $10 in gas money from a guy who just couldn't take care of her, and she came with her whole setup...lights and all.

Hi and glad you like her. Haitian Boas rarely if ever bite. I've personally collected them in years past and even wild ones usually do not bite. They make great captives and are very beautiful. They also change color to a degree. Yours is nice and I believe with good care and food it will brighten up even more. Good luck to you with your new captive....TC

FRoberts May 13, 2008 06:14 PM

Wish I could get one for 10 dollars. Especialy at the gas prices these days

Now that's a good value!!!

That is a great snake. Congratulations. We do not get tired of seeing pics; heck, we'll even look at Columbian Rainbow Boas.
