Went out last night!

jv4man May 13, 2008 01:19 PM

Went out last night to Juno Rd. Winds 20 mph at 7:20pm. 89 degrees. One Atrox crossind the road. Found two yearling lepidus on the cut immediately. Once night fell, a storm started blowing in from the west. At 9:50pm while lightning was striking, no rain yet, found a gorgeous adult blairs female crossing the road. It was 81 degrees at this time and windy windy windy. Immediately afterward found a ground snake and an emory rat. Tarantulas ruled the road with more mammals than I've ever seen out there. It started raining for about 30 min. After the rain, temps dropped and were 76-79, depending on where you were. Nothing was found after the rain. Total count:
2 lepidud
2 atrox
2 dor atrox
1 ground snake
1 emory
1 most beautiful dark gray and bright orange blairs alterna female.
Best single night I've had on this road. Will let all no what I see tonight. Pics coming soon!

I believe you were right ahead of us. Were you in a little black or dark colored truck ?? You are correct the t’s were insane. There was a lot of rain west of there last night which got me excited but all we found other than bugs were atrox and mojos. Litterly hundreds of them throughout the night. Did the sheriff stop you up there ?? He did us and was extremely nice and gave us no problems.

jim0602 May 13, 2008 04:03 PM

I was clearing a fresh clipped gopher from the road. Still alive but crushed. He asked if we needed any help and said no just clearing a snake from the road. He said have a good night and I did the same and we went opposite directions. We were questioned 5 times by 3 different agencies and all were very nice.

jv4man May 13, 2008 04:30 PM

I was driving a tan colored f-150. I did see the little black truck you speak of . Not sure who that was. Will anyone be out tonight? I've been stopped by highway patrol, and border patrol. They've been very friendly. Hope to see some fellow herpers tonight!

jim0602 May 13, 2008 04:58 PM

we will be in a blue mini van and in that area up to Dryden and north.

stevenxowens792 May 13, 2008 03:24 PM

Juno is always so hit or miss. Seems like when it is busting out it really busts out. Other times you can hunt that road for 2 weeks straight and not see squat.

Congrats on your find. Was it close to the s-curves?

Can't wait to get out myself.

Also, what did the sheriff say? I hope you were just "driving" the roads...

Best Wishes,

Steven

We went out to our ranch on the Devil's river and herped Sat and Sun, nothing to speak of. We made 2 passes from Juno store to South Bakers cuts and shined there twice both nights. Lots of millipedes and mammals, nothing else. Saw less than 10 vehicles all night. Humidity must have helped.
Which cuts do you shine?

alternarush May 13, 2008 07:57 PM

Man, I can't wait to see your pics! Nice work.

rustduggler May 13, 2008 09:11 PM

You say it was crossing the road. how did you sex it? Just curious. Rusty

MikeRusso May 13, 2008 09:45 PM

I am thinking ... Probe?

rustduggler May 13, 2008 10:13 PM

................to pick one up on the road/right of way then probe it. Am I misunderstanding the new law? can someone please clarify? Rusty

retnaburner May 14, 2008 06:53 AM

A probe is a simple yes or no survey given to snakes when you want to know more about them. She just happend to check the F box under the gender question.

MikeRusso May 14, 2008 08:27 AM

Of course i was just assuming it was a probe..

Maybe the snake was just complaining a lot and they assumed it was a female!

Maybe the snake was just complaining a lot and they assumed it was a female!

I have to give you some major points for that one.... There is truth in there

You knew it was female at that point.

LOL

alternarush May 14, 2008 09:11 AM

I can tell the gender of a lampro from above, I don't know what's wrong with Rusty Wiggler, or whatever his name is.

DNA.

rustduggler May 14, 2008 08:00 PM

...........when your underneath one also. regards, rusty wiggler

mike17L May 14, 2008 11:17 AM

I had a female boa with me one day, and was showing it to a female friend. I told her it was a female and she wondered how on earth I knew it was a female. My response "ever since I got her in the truck, she hasnt stopped talking."

for some reason she didnt think it was as funny as I thought it was.

you can just smell a female

jv4man May 16, 2008 06:21 PM

If you had much experience with colubrids, you'd know they can be visually sexed. Read a "beginner" snake book and you'd figure it out too.

JediKnight1971 May 14, 2008 02:36 PM

Congrats...

I happened to be west of where you were, but the rain was real hit and miss. Temps held until near 2:00am, then a strong north wind prevailed. Rained from Ozona all the way to San Angelo...

Happy herpin'...

My son never spots a snake before I do, until this one. It was awesome for his first "spot it before dad" was such a great find!

jv4man May 14, 2008 06:43 PM

didn't go so well. Saw a patchnose just before dark, then spent $3.74 a gallon for the next 5 hrs without another find. Definately can't complain with the trip totals though. Hope to get back out soon. Any luck last night Jim??

alternarush May 14, 2008 08:41 PM

Very Nice animal

Here's the linkless pic for all...

jcraft75 May 14, 2008 09:12 PM

Shouldn't have been too difficult for the son to spot out there in a container in the middle of the road... guess that qualifies as litter removal? More ammo... way to go.

shannon brown May 14, 2008 08:42 PM

.

jon101 May 14, 2008 09:45 PM

i will assume hunting from the row is legal again??

jpenney May 15, 2008 08:04 AM

Nope but I'm sure he was crossing a private ranch road.

Of course I was..

Eby May 15, 2008 12:39 AM

Is this a joke?

Unless you a staging some sort of complex and risky counter-sting, an in-situ shot would have been a better choice.

We will have good odds in challenging a ticket based on photographing or rescuing herps found on the road. A ticket based on a snake described as "crossing the road" then shown in tub will be tough to challenge.

jv4man May 16, 2008 05:48 PM

Yup a joke. Thanks

Shaky May 15, 2008 03:46 PM

Crawled right into a plastic container, huh?

Of course, as it's not legal to collect, I SINCERELY HOPE you DON'T have photos of the animal IN HAND!
Also, I am positive you didn't keep it for your collection. In fact, you didn't even move it off the road, right?!

Now, if you ran it over, no problem at all....

Make sure you remember what and how you post.

Does anyone see a lid on the container...If tire testers can drive up and down Juno Rd (speeding) possibly killing dozens of them every year, you better believe I'll fight for my right to photograph one in a container. Thanks to those that congradulated me, and I'll pray that those jelous ones out there are as lucky as I was when they make it out there!

Joe Forks May 16, 2008 06:53 PM

The EXIF information is still intact on your photograph, and that indicates that your photo was taken on 5/13/08 at 8:27:03 PM. Your prior post states that you "went out last night" which by the date of your post was 5/12/09 PM to 5/13/08 AM.

Do what you want to do, but don't hang everyone else out to dry because you want to break the law.

I do not think anyone is jealous (I saw the pic and I know that I certainly am not), they are just trying to help you out. Most of the people on this forum just want to not ruffle any feathers. I know that Juno road is not a secret spot by any means, but I know that most do not want to give LE any reason to be out hassling any herpers that are NOT collecting. I personally do not have a problem with you taking that animal, especially if it is your or your son's first, but just don't advertise that you are breaking the law. Congratulations on your find. As someone else mentioned earlier, take a pic on the cut if you are going to post.

jv4man May 17, 2008 05:34 PM

Sorry to all offended anyone. Just proud of my son's first. Thought everyone would like to see. Thanks all for info on the new laws

Eby May 17, 2008 06:33 PM

Congrats to you and your son on a nice find and a great trip. Hopefully the next trip can be as enjoyable and productive, but without the unpleasant aftertaste. This ROW ban SUCKS!

jv4man May 17, 2008 09:31 PM

Thanks a bunch! Dang right it sucks.

antelope May 18, 2008 11:36 AM

With That I totally agree!
