Gecko Preference?

Danne May 13, 2008 04:12 PM

I just started working at Petsmart and they have 2 leopard geckos in one cage. They are adults (as they grew older they weren't so cute and no one wanted them) and have lived together for about a year there. I've been thinking about buying them (and a 20 gallon tank for them) for a while now, they look healthy (I've been around them a lot), are pretty friendly.

The only problem is I'm wondering if I should get both or just one. Do they prefer company or to be alone? I know that at least one is a male, the other seems like a female but she was squirmy when I held it so I couldn't tell for sure. I haven't seen them fighting so I guess that's the case.

And if that's true, then do you think I would be competent at hatching and raising baby leos as a newbie to geckos? I've kept snakes before (the most difficult being my Rainbow Boa) but I don't want to get into something that I'm not prepared for or would make my new pets unhappy or unhealthy.

Sometimes two males will grow up together in harmony and it only becomes a problem when some part of the habitat is changed so make sure you have a pair first. Leopard geckos breed so if that is your intention it is a lot of fun but first make sure you have a market for the 20 babies and the resources to incubate, feed and house babies individually. Leopard geckos dont get lonely so dont feel bad about buying one if you just want a pet. The fact that you are concerned about weather or not you are capable of breeding geckos right means that you probably will be if you do the research. Have Fun
