One slug litter...?

charmer May 13, 2008 07:01 PM

So I came home from work for lunch and my female hog isle that I'd given up hope on being gravid... had produced a slug. One lonely, ugly, sent-to-confuse-stephanie, slug.
This female was bred for months by my orange male hog. He lost interest, she had swollen up... but nothing big and noticeable like an ovulation. So, I recorded both sheds since then. Based on the one I thought was the POS, she was due the 28th of last month... based on the other, only half-way through possible pregnancy. I am not sure about hog gestation, I went by the more common BCI averages as far as POS dates.
She slimmed down a bit all throughout her body, not just the upper half, but continued to HCcoil and would change location depending on temperatures shifting at night... all the right signs, (even refusing food all but twice), but on a very, NOT gravid looking boa. I realize hogs have small litters, but there was no sign of anything cooking in that oven... or so I thought.
Well, the saying you never know what you are gunna get... really proves out today. She started messing up the cage late last night or this morning and I thought nothing of it. I've watched her all day and she has continued to press against the floor with the side of her head, as if pushing around babies, since earlier when I arrived to find the one slug at 12pm-ish. A small amount of body twisting and very uncomfortable looking positions have also commenced, though not as badly. I think she may have had just one slug in her...
Any thoughts?? My first Hog breeding and my first partial (maybe) birth... does this happen for you other folks? A litter with one slug? When you folks have a one baby litter is there any slugs or dead young expelled with it? Ever had a litter that starts with one baby/still/pill and then continues hours later to deliver any more? I'm not expecting anything right now, but am still hopeful that this is just the beginning and not the beginning AND end... other experiences similar to this anyone would like to share?
Thanks guys!

She eventually stopped rubbing her face around on the ground and contorting her body... nothing else ever appeared. She is very alert to me at the moment despite the fact that she did not have any young, I will be cleaning her cage tonight and probably fighting to remove that slug. I haven't wanted to bother her until I was certain it wouldn't impede on her privacy or concentration.
The weirdest thing... she didn't expel much, if any, birth fluid with that slug. It was nearly dry all around it when I found it and I'd only been gone for a few hours at work. The glass wasn't fogged at all until I misted her in hopes of helping to ease whatever she may have had left within, out. Is that normal? Although I have my doubts, perhaps that is a sign that it was an early leaving? I expect nothing more from her, but am still watching just in case.
Thanks for all the advice, thoughts and support guys!

my 6 foot hog had only 6 slugs last year. Same thing though as far as no visible ovulation, didnt look skinny or still gravid afterwards but she rubbed her face real bad for reasons i cant explain the next day. She ended up being fine and had an obvious ovulation this year. good luck
