Hypo Hog Female After Surgery

Southernboids May 13, 2008 07:27 PM

Here is our girl resting in her cat bed. This is what she came home in from the vet and she seems to really like it. She had surgery last Friday in Jacksonville Fl. by Dr. Rossi, the one who wrote "What's Wrong With My Snake".

I thought she pushed everything out except a single slug. I waited to see if she would ever push that last one, but she never did. Instead Dr. Rossi had to do surgery and he pulled out 4 old slugs on top of everything she emptied last week! He had to cut her twice, once on the tail that you can see in the picture and another farther up. Held together with staples for the next 6 to 8 weeks.
She is resting for now.

That poor gal, been through a lot and still hangin' in there for ya!
With medical care from the best, hopefully she will be back to her old self in no time, right?! Once those huge incisions heal, I bet she'll be glad those old nasties are gone! Bleh... I hate slugs.

I had a leopard gecko about a month ago that pulled through the same surgery... it's amazing what these little guys are capable of! Hopefully she'll pull through, I'm sure she will... it seems to me she's in very good hands! Good Luck none-the-less

Those things are very prevalent here in Florida. I had a female boa have surgery on her tail and battled those dumb things for months. They lay eggs in between the staples. I looked them up and apparently scientists in Florida found this "awesome" fly in South America that was supposedly able to control the fire ant population. So they bred them and let them loose in Florida, guess what? Didnt work. So now we have a bunch of what they call "cadaver" flies running around. They look like fruit flies, but they aren't. They lay eggs in rotting things and open wounds. Any how just keep an eye out because they are small and a big pain. I am guessing you have them up there in Jacksonville. Hope she recovers quickly for you looks like a really nice surgery job! Good Vet!

Hey Shawn,
Glad to see she came through fine. A few years ago we had a girl that had surgery and the vet put Liquid Bandaid on the suture line to help prevent infection and also to keep dirt and feces from getting in it. You might give your vet a shout and see what he thinks. I seemed to work very well for our girl. Our vet had me re-apply it every 3 or 4 days until she healed up.

Kathy

P.S. The vet that did our girls surgery was Dr. Swerida. He was a contributor on that book.

A very small piece of No Pest Strip will keep those pesky flies away. A piece about 1" x 1" will do the trick.

To answer a few questions or comments...

There is a type of surgical superglue used before she had the staples put in, but I didnt get any more to apply myself. Wish I would have thought to ask for some!

The cadaver flies.. YUK.. I do not think I have them but I will surely keep an eye out for them!@! They do not sound nice or clean... did I mention YUK!

Thanks again for all the positive comments.. I really hope this girl pulls through and starts to eat soon!! She has had a really rough 3 weeks... actually a rough year while holding ALL those old sulgs.. but much worse in the past 3 weeks.

OH yea.. on a final note.. I ordered one of the Baby Doppler Heart Monitors.. it should be here by Friday I hope. I have a another hypo hog due in 4 weeks and two females I have no idea what is going on with them. Will be fun to try and find the heart beats!!

Here is the surgery girl when she was just an hour old!

I wish her/you the best of luck with her recovery. I hope she bounces back quickly. She is absolutely gorgeous. I find it odd that she enjoys the cat bed though, I think she earns a little spoilage.

Hi Shawn,

I hope she's doing better soon, poor girl. You did so much to help her, I can't even to begin to imagine how frustrating it must have been waiting and hoping she would pass them on her own. It seemed like she knew you were helping her in the video too, that was just amazing. Thanks for sharing your story and wishing her a speedy recovery.

(ps, a cat bed! What a nifty idea)
