Update on New New Mexican "Willardi"

hotsearch May 14, 2008 11:22 AM

Betrayal of confidence.
It seems I'm now "out of the loop" due to the
headaches I created by posting my original statement.
The party that supplied me with the information about this
"find" is now P.O.ed because his associate (the "collector"
didn't want it made public. I have a small image of this "find" but I was told I not getting the larger photos I was promised.

I'm new to this hobby and WANTED to create a database of new localities of herps. After reading all the "opinions" about what the people/person SHOULD DO with what they/he found its no wonder why people in this hobby/industry cloak themselves with false identities. Its also no wonder why the autorities rule by conservation through confiscation. The herp community is more disjunct than the range of the animal in question.

Since my associates no longer have confidence in me and I am no longer going to receive anymore info on this subject I have decided to post the image I was given (if I can figure out how to do it). I'm of the same camp as some of you...that being, that if someone has something new he/they should do what they want with it. Why should the autorities be in control of this. Most every animal; protected or not, that made it's way into private collections has been bred to the point that it is no longer threatened or endangered. Keep in mind that it wasn't the academics that did this...it was the private (commercial breeders). When did anyone get help from the Gov./Autorities to do that?

The image I have is a small file and low resolution. I'll post it as soon as I figure out how to do it.

Due to all the headaches about this I now understand why people cloak themselves....now I have to do the same.

Stand by....

I cannot believe that you don't understand the part about whether or not it is threatened or endangered or doing just fine, an internet posting of exact localities can/will draw many, many people, some of which will destroy or alter the habitat rendering it useless for said herps. While there are many who do a good job at replacing cover, there are many that don't care, for the sake of a photo or an animal to keep or sell. A county name and a landmark is all some people need to find and destroy a place. I post most all of my finds with county only and rarely enough habitat to find the exact locality. Do what you wish, it is still a free country, more or less. I don't mean to bash, just letting my opinion be known on the subject.

Consider yourself lucky that you are no longer associated with these people. I you were smarter, you'd turn the "collector" (what's with the smiley face everytime you write that?) over to the proper authorities.

Everything you need to know in order to find a reptile is in a field guide. There is absolutely no necessity to post locations on the internet, especially when dealing with an endangered animal.

I see your side of things as well as their side. Your intentions were good. I think that says alot.

As you know, this hobby is full of various people. 1)Some are very knowledgeable and/or considerate people; 2)Some are beginners who do not know better about messing up habitat; 3)And then there are those who are happy pilfering animals (by "pilfering" I mean taking way too many than needed) with zero regard for anything, animals included.

It is those last 2 groups that people are trying to protect the "secret spots" from.
