w/c hypermelanistic "Miami" phase

DMong May 14, 2008 12:39 PM

I stumbled onto a slightly better pic of this girl today. She was captured some years ago in Miami/Dade County. She had a VERY unusual amount of gray coloration to her background, and a good portion of the latter part of her body had HALF of it that was "jet black" colored!....a strangely unique hypermelanistic animal if there ever was one!

It's too bad that I don't have her anymore though, a long time ago I had to sell many of my snakes due to a necessity that appeared.

The plan was to do some trial breedings with it, see if it was genetically recessive, and then proceed to selectively breed for the most black.......Can you just picture in your mind a jet black cornsnake with vivid red/orange blotches???...wow!

best regards, ~Doug

Who did you sell her to and are they doing anything with her?

I haven't heard of hypermelanism in corns before.

I decided my old sig was too big.

Well, the sad thing about that situation is that I think it was sold to a pet store of all places, so no telling whatsoever where she finally wound up. This was a LONG time ago(8 or 9 years ago) so it's anyone's guess. It's really disappointing to me when I think back on some of the killer stuff I had to let go.

Like you said,...I've never seen, or heard of ANYTHING else in cornsnakes that displayed hypermelanism like that one displayed, especially to THAT degree.......oh well, it's certainly not the first unique looking animal that was allowed to "slip" between a herper's fingers...GRRR!!

Yeah Jeff,.....it's too bad I, or anyone else I know doesn't still have her, I think THAT girl had a lot to contribute to the hobby. Unfortunately like you said, she is LOOOOOONG gone!..(sniffle-sniffle)..LOL!

That female would of been a lovely match for this male.
Not quite as dark as your old female but they would of been cool together.

i done quite a few different breedings with him and hatched out some really dark sibs, i will try and find more photos of the pairings and babys , iv got stacks of non digital pics to go through now , DOH.
here are a couple i found so far.

early 1980's.

Yes!,....I couldn't agree with you more about that male being a perfect match for the female I had!!!!...Wow!, I imagine the offspring would have been VERY dark indeed!. That would have been the PERFECT start to that project I mentioned!.......what a bummer!

I really look forward to any additional photo's you can manage to dig up on the offspring that were produced.........thanks!
