What is a good color combination for a beginner breeder?

shimmercat3 Aug 31, 2003 06:17 AM

Hello,

I posted a message yesterday but I can't find it now so I think I might have done it wrong. I am thinking about breeding bearded dragons in the near future. I have done a lot of research and have some experience in reptiles but not breeding. I hear that they are fairly easy to breed. I know that I want to get at least one color variation since they seem to get more money as hatchlings than plain ones. I don't know what kind to consider. I am thinking sub-adults a breeding pair either the same color variation or two different colors between the prices of 200-300 any suggestions? I know about hibernation, feeding, housing, light and heat and incubation temperature 84 degrees right? But is there anything else I need to know? Also is there a place you can suggest where I can be sure that the two I buy will be able to breed? Or a place I can buy bearded dragon food and crickets in bulk or wholesale? And how are hatchlings shipped?

Thank you,

Well, I think that you are into breeding for the wrong reason. If you are in for the money, this is not right for you. If you want nice dragons, try Dragons Den Herp. I have never bought there, but the dragons sure are nice. Yes, the incubation temp is around 84 degrees. You can buy crickets bulk from a variety of places. Try LLLReptile or wormman. The hatchlings are shipped a variety of ways. One of the ways that is very successful is by placing a 32 ounce deli container with poked holes and the baby inside. That is placed in the box and padded. Someone else should be able to explain the shipping better.

Hello,

I think my message came off as someone looking to make tons of money but that is not what I intended. I am definitely not looking to make lots of money at this. But I do want to be able to cover the cost of the dragons if I buy a pair. I have been interested in dragons for years. And I am far more interested in watching their behavior and having beautiful pets than breeding for a profit. I have looked at dragons den and sandfire dragon ranch pretty much every site I can find, but I'm not sure what a good color combination is. And if they will all interbreed. I have looked for a site which describes all the colors and what the difference is but I cannot find any. Am I supposed to just pick on my preference?

Thanks a lot,

Start with that for a few months, then think about buying one dragon and see how it goes, if life is great, then add another one, once you know even more and have two separate setups for them. Then you will have the next 1-2 years to learn the answer to all your questions :D

Then, when you are sure you have great animals to add to the gene pool here, not related and causing you and them more problems, extra money that not needed for anything for a few months and won't be missed if never recovered, you can bred them and become a slave too.

My cable is not strong enough to list all the other information you will need to know to pick out, buy, setup, feed, house and raise one dragon to adulthood...... but baby steps are a good way to start and forums and online reading of experienced keepers site is a start.....Black and white
