Speaking of eggs...

My first chondros!!!

Hi all, sorry I haven't been around. I've been super busy with life these days but I have been checking in on the forum. I'd like to first say congrats to Milo for his clutch. Those eggs look terrific! Also, congrats of producing the firsat and second clutches of 2008! I got your stats. Yours too Jess, nice job. Jeff, congratulations on the Argentines. i picked up those numbers as well (although I'm not sure that I need to now that we have that stat site)

OK, My turn. Today was day 50 for my maternally incubated chondro clutch and they began hatching just like clockwork. They are really cool looking. Lots of variety in the clutch. Reds, yellows, maroons ans it looks like a yellow blaze. None seem to be fully out of the eggs yet. But I'll post individual pics soon. Thanks for looking!

Mike,
....WOW!!! That last PIC is a definite photo contest winner. It looks like ALL the eggs are hatching. I know people who have not hatched any chondro eggs even after having clutches for several years. You done real good.
Jeff

Congrats Mike!! Those are some awesome looking babies! That last photo is killer too.... I might have to 'steal' that one, lol!

So.... why are some Chondros yellow and some maroon when they hatch? What does it signify?

Mike, those look awsome, wow! Those dark burgundy ones are real cool looking. Great job! You've gotta be pretty excited. It must be really neat to see multiple colored hatchlings popping out of the same clutch like that. How long does it take for them to start turning their adult colors?

medyssa May 14, 2008 11:29 PM

I totally want a red one!!!

Mike,
That is really great. I'm interested in the maternally incubated clutch with arboreal snakes. Looks like mom knew what she was doing.
Congrats,
Paul

The first time I saw one of those in a pet store years ago I didn't think it was real, and couldn't believe it when someone told me it was. Those are some awesome little guys and nice job with the pics! One day you'll have to tell me your camera setup. You get some really nice, and very realistic pictures of your animals. I still can't get the snakes I bought from you to look like the pics you took, and your pics look the most like the snakes!! Anyway, I'm rambling, but CONGRATS are in order here!

gfx May 15, 2008 12:10 PM

Those are jaw droppers, congrats!

I just love the colors, they so appeal to my inner magpie. The pix are great, especially the last one.

Jeff Clark May 15, 2008 02:37 PM

We are a bunch of truly strange people with hyperactive inner magpie disorder.

Hey thanks a lot you guys for all of the nice comments and for sharing this special occasion with me. All said and done, there are 18 live babies. Two others hatched but died shortly after and I pulled one dead baby out of its egg today. One slug. Momma's looking good and I'm going to try feeding her this weekend. I'm really going to try and leave them alone now until they shed and the feeding trials begin. I hear that's the hardest part. Here are just a few more snaps because I'm still very excited. Note the egg tooth in a couple of the pictures

What kind of camera do you use? Very cute babies too. Sorry about the ones that didn't make it, but 18 live ones are a blessing!

flavor May 16, 2008 08:08 AM

I just use a Sony Cybershot. 5 megapixel. I use the macro setting with flash. I have these stiff pieces of black felt that I set up in the background, on the sides and below the animals when I'm taking pictures. I guess they act like a cheap light box.

I love how they just hang there and look nice. Its so neat how they're born outrageous colors and then change into an entirely new set of outrageous colors. I look forward to pix of them as they grow and change, your photos are great. Neat that you got pix of the egg tooth.
