Help! my boa just had babies!

captaincaiman May 15, 2008 01:29 AM

I have just started out breeding boas and I'm lost as to what to do. My boa put out about 25 slugs and 7 non slug babies. however only 1 is alive. it has a yoke attached to it. I placed it in a plastic shoebox on top of wet paper towels so that the yoke wouldn't dry up. Was this what I should have done? when will it separate from the yoke? I'm totally lost. I don't want to lose this little guy. Thanks Ron.

Ron,
You did the right thing buddy. Great job! The yolk will take care of itself.

Thanks, I usually breed Kings and Corns. This is my first time with boas. live birth is definitely different. I guess I'm just being overly concerned due to the fact that only 1 made it out of the whole clutch. I've been looking at other photos on here of newborns, and haven't seen a lot with egg yokes attached, and the other babies seem to be moving around. Mine just lays there. He twist around a little from time to time. but thats it. I've been up with it all night. I check on it every couple hours. Thanks again for the advise.

Your little guy should be ok......just make sure the paper towel stays damp/but not too wet....the baby will absorb the yolk over the next couple of days depending on how large it is. Just keep an eye on it and all should go smoothly. Once the yolk is absorbed the umbilicus will drop off on its own and the rest will retract into the belly button.....do not pull it off....

Aside from that.....welcome to the fascinating world of live babies

What temp did you incubate mom at? And do you know how long after her POS she gave birth? These could both be major reasons you ended up with slugs and stillborns... along with many other factors. If you give us a bit more info we might be able to help a bit better.

I don't know what POS means, Sorry. If your talking about sex with the male. it was in November I think? As far as the temp of the encloser I'm not sure about that either. I built a custom cage for them. Its about 4.5ft deep 3.5ft wide, and 5ft tall. at the top left side I have a 250w heat lamp that runs 24/7. I have a branch that runs from the bottom left to the top right of the cage. the far right of the cage has no heat source. this enables them to choose the temp that they want. What I think may have happened to the babies that were not slugs is, I think they were crushed by the other boas. I have 2 females an 1 male in the cage. the female who gave birth is about 7ft the other female is about 5ft and the male is about 6ft. I plan on building a bigger encloser now because of this. It will be around 8ft long by 4ft wide and 5ft tall.

Please dont take offense to this, but you should keep them seperate, you should also do A LOT of research on the animals before you breed them, if they babies were "crushed", I'm sorry but thats terrible.....
