'08 Womas hatching!

captnemo May 15, 2008 10:00 AM

So, my hatch rates for last year were as follows: Clutch 1- 1 of 15, Clutch 2- 9 of 14.

I spent the past year trying to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. I got some good advice from both Tom Koegan and Brett (lateralis), as well as some others. I switched to a less ventilated egg box with a drier perlite mix. This kept surface condensation almost non-existent while allowing the RH to remain high. In addition, I elevated the eggs higher above the perlite to reduce condensation on them. I also dropped my temps, which stayed around 86F during the whole incubation process.

The first clutch started hatching yesterday morning. Of 14 eggs, one appeared ruptured upon oviposition and did not make it. Of the remaining 13, 6 pipped in the past 24 hours (58/59 days), and I manually pipped the others this morning. Even the one whose egg I thought looked questionable looks healthy and well developed.

I'll post more pics after they all emerge.
