Spotted Turtles age to Maturity

pats Aug 31, 2003 07:54 AM

In general, how long does it take captive bred spotteds to reach sexual maturity and at what age can they be sexed?

Thanks for the help,
PatS

As with any reptile, age does not make any difference, but size does. Any male that courts, is probably fertile, and any female large enough to pass an egg is ready.

So at what size would a 'typical' captive raised male start courting and at what size would a female be able to pass an egg and under captive conditions with daily feeding of a variety of foods how long would it take them (on average) to reach this size? Anyone have an response that is actually helpful?

Thanks!

4 years is about the norm . I know at the Philadelphia zoo they bred spotted at 18 months. This is not the norm but is possible. I have males breed at about 3.25 inches and 3 years old. I have 4 females that all hatched from the same clutch almost four years ago.Two are 3.25 inches and 2 are 3.5 inches. The smaller 2 laid this year for the first time while the larger two didn't. Only one of the 2 clutches hatched. All the females were in with the same 3 males that were closer too four inches. Over all I think it depends on the turtle. I hope this helps.

Thanks so much, just what I was looking for. They are great turtles with lots of personality. Mine come running when they see me.

Best,
