Are bird pellets safe??

hatchdragon Aug 31, 2003 09:03 AM

OK... I rarely offer pellets. My dragons snub them most of the time for live prey and veggies, but a couple do like them. So I had actually ran out of pellets the other day and decided to give them Zupreem Avian Maint. Fruit Blend for cockatiels until I could get to the store!! LOL!! It just looked so fruity, clolorful and smelled so good I though what the heck. THEY LOVED IT!! I have tried all reptile pellets comercially offered at one time or another, and have never had them eat like this!! SOOOOO my question is... would there be anything harmful to reps in a bird diet?? Just wondering!!

I am not sure about the pellet, but if they contain any seed I would not give it to them. This is a picture of a blockage AFTER several treatements to flush it out of the lizard, it was much larger and cloudy. They did have to resort to surgery to remove the final are of blockage and found it contained millet that the animal had ingested and could not digest.

This is not a bearded dragon, but a Uro

I would think that you can feed them the bird pellets, they seem to be made from the same stuff, I would use them mixed in or as a treat to get them used to the idea of trying pellets. The bird pellets are lower in protien and fat. BTW mine went nuts for them last night as well, they are usually not real interested in pellets. There are no seeds in the pellets.

and have used zupreem, (i use lefabers [spelling] now) you are better off with a diet that is geared for dragons not birds, they have different nutritional needs, i cant see giving a peice of zupreem as a treat being detrimental but i wouldnt feed it as part of their daily diet. some of the things that are in the bird diet like ground corn might be a bit hard for them to digest.
ingredient list of zupreem avian maintenance fruitblend flavor

Thanks everyone!! I wouldn't use it as a staple by any means, but I might sprinkle some over greens once or twice a week... Just because they seemed to love them so much. They get plenty of protein from their crickets, superworms, and pinkies... so I don't think it will cause any probs. I just found it interesting that they ate them so readily considering they wouldn't eat pellets hardly at all in the past.
