Working with Threatened/Endangered Torts

ROC May 15, 2008 10:54 PM

I was wondering what species everyone feels is most important to work with and establish a large captive colony of because of their current endangered status or threats they are currently facing. I'm expecially interested in those species that in the near future will likely be threatened or endangered.

Burmese Stars are one species teetering on the brink of extinction. Additionally, any of the tortoise species from Madagascar are in grave danger of becoming extinct. The Pyxis planicauda and G. yniphora are in extreme peril. Most in danger is G. yniphora, the Madagascar Ploughshare Tortoise, of which there were estimated to be only 200-250 yniphora left in the wild as of 2007. There may be even fewer than that today. Just to confirm, that number is two HUNDRED, not thousand.

But working with some of them legally ie.Madagascar Ploughshare Tortoise is almost impossible

Unless obtained thru confiscation from relevant authority !!

I wont mind some of them in my collection and work to breed them and even releasing them back into their native homeland if needed BUT first you got to have them !!

If legal issue taken out of picture and animals obtained just to increase its specie's population That will be much easier !!

All Asian turtle are in need of help.To the supprise of all some went from common as dirt to rare in less than 15 yrs.Cuora flavomargina was a common low end pet trade turtle in the early 90's (less than $10 wholesale) by the end of that decade they became scarce.Try to find an adult for sale. The history of the Asian turtle crisis began about 1989 when the Chinese money was converted to the world money market, and their money was spent outside of China.A huge"middle class" demanded turtles for food and TCM.(voo-doo meds).People in all of Asia had used turtles for themselfs to eat and trade daily but know one ever wanted TONS of turtles daily. Now they are offered money,of which many have little of.Its been known as a dark hole for dissapearing turtles.Vic

Sadly I agree with all of this thread. The best way to approach this is to decide which species you have a personal interest in, and the ability to care for. I have watched many "common" species become "rare" and other "rare" species become "common." I think that ALL turtle and tortoise species can use our help. That being said pick the ones that work for you and your environment. There are many that I wish to work with in the future; that I do not believe would do well for me in South Florida, so I do not currently work with them. I will leave that for someone else. I think that it helps to think in 6 to 12 year cycles; if you can't imagine investing 6 to 12 years on a turtle or tortoise project, it may not pan out as you would hope. I moved my collection less than 3 miles years ago and it all but shut down production for 2 years. In 2005 I was hit by Hurricane Katrina and Wilma which took out a few trees on the property which changed everything for the tortoises and they needed a year to adapt to the changes, even though their pens never moved. This probably does not help at all just a personal observation. Best wishes Douglas Beard / Flora & Fauna

We thought it needs a Katrina/Wilma combo in order to lift up that big SriMoma of yours how big is she now?

btw, in your observation; does it affects the old adults more than da young ones and do you think location has much to do with it? Ours are making out like there's no tomorrow even on breeding loans ranging anywhere between 60 to 400 miles North or South where temp differs as much as 30/40 degrees, the young ones could careless but these adults has never been able to produce from their previous owners (which makes leaves wonder ?!?) btw...

... I'm not repeating myself again am I? it makes you wonder if one can really escape MOTHER NATURE when she's drunk...

Soon as they figure out who you are under this name... you'll be banned yet again.

That has to be some kind of record for a single list... no?

You seem to follow the same misconception I did. The web is totally controlled by the individuals who operate the site.

It's kind of ironic if you think about it.

There is this open medium controlled by individuals.

oh... I just realized... you can be different than the person who I assume you are in which case you have my appogy... but I don't think so.

Not really. The internet IS free. If you wanna have a website with no rules, so be. Go make it. I am sure you'll have traffic from some very fine individuals.

This website is owned by a corporation that has rules. The very same as you make the rules for your website or your living room for that matter. You control what you own, Onlinehobbyist.com Inc. controls and makes the rules that govern this website. If someone calls you a vile name in your living room in front of your wife you would be well within your rights (and really should) kick that @ss out of your home.

Until you understand this parallel you will never understand from where the rules come from.

I think it SHOULD be controlled by it's owners and NOT be another entity as this other entity is THE GOVERNMENT and they seem to screw up everything they touch. If you want to have the wild west on your own website here is a link to get you started.
