My new snakeroom......

rainbowsrus May 15, 2008 11:20 PM

Well, after much work and delays from living life, the new room is almost ready.....

From the garage looking into the divided off section....

From the door way looking toward the left, had to make an alcove around the window...

From the doorway again looking right, you can see the rollup door and note all the wall outlets are very high so the cages won't block them.

looking toward the window alcove, the track light had to be set towards that end of the room to allow room for the rollup door.

Back towards the door, it was placed in the middle to leave room on either side for caging.

The other side of the door, pretty cool garage door setup, no overhead opener track, the opener goes on the header, the springs are inside the tube

Now I'm waiting on my Boas to drop litters before moving cages.

Also, have a room AC I need to vent to the outside for the hot summer days

Job well done! Outstanding attention to detail, you can tell experience had a big hand in designing that space. I really dig that garage door, is it insulated too?

Does anyone in the bay area actually park cars in their garage? I know I didnt, mine was my kennel building and party room. I had to move to CA to see a carpeted garage, but now I cant imagine wasting the space on cars! lol.

rainbowsrus May 16, 2008 01:30 PM

Yeah, I tried to make a fully finished room, with a added closet space it could even be a bedroom.

I have a three car garage and at most I can only get one car in it!!!

And yes, the garage door is insulated...

Dave,
....It was quite a while back. I think it was from a post where PICs of some that you had produced sort of looked Peruvian. I have forgotten exact details. Oh well!

I would sooooo love to have a basement with the inherent cooling capacity they have!!!!

I definately does make it easier to get your temps consistent.

aanata1 May 16, 2008 06:15 PM

living in California (other than the expense that is). I wish my new house had a basement too... or an air conditioner. You're right, it would be easier to cool the room. I was meaning to ask you how you keep your snakes cool in the summer. I know you're a bit further north than me (a bit being the vast majority of california), so you may not have this problem, but we always have a couple weeks of 90s weather in august. I don't know how tolerant BRBs are to that. I know the BCIs will be pleased. I was thinking of just getting one of those little window a/c units for my snake room. Necessary or not?

rainbowsrus May 16, 2008 06:51 PM

Yeah, it can get hot here but at least am in the bay area so get ocean cooling.

My first snake room is downstairs, other rooms on three sides, the other side faces east so is the coolest room in the house. At least is was before all the snakes and heaters. Also the room has a inlaws quarters option that the original buyer opted for, includes insulation in all walls for soundproofing.

I have a portable AC unit for the garage room, Still have to open a hole at the currently covered over screen vent to exhaust the unit. Will get some pics once I have it installed.

I had a window AC unit that I ran a half dozen times a year. CA houses that I lived in didnt have much in the way of insulation or weatherproofing. Just make sure to get an AC unit that restarts itself if the power goes out. My bigger one did, but a smaller unit wouldnt turn on again unless I was there to turn it on. Log.

How are you at heavy lifting??? The hardest part will be moving my melamine cages, unstacking, tipping on side, moving, righting back up and restacking.

And has to be coordinated so the right cage gets to the room at the right time. Will be a fun time!!!! Hmmmmm, gets me thinking, maybe a herper BBQ/moving party...

Wow..... you did a fantastic job! It looks just like another room in a house rather than a garage. Way cool! I wish I had a second snake room, (the bedroom doesn't count) lol.

That was exactly my intent, make a room in the garage that could be for anything, not just a crappy slapped together room.

At the rate you are procuring and producing snakes you may need to build UP!!!! (another floor perhaps)

Looks great...

you should take before, now, and after filled with enclosures pic's so we get FULL effect. (as in a dave super post)

At least your wife gets you back for awhile LOL.

You can build stuff and breed stuff. Great skills to have when you need to add on to the house.

Plus you could always stick the "in laws" in there with the boas if need be.

Dave,
That room looks really nice. A far cry from the framing I saw when there.
Good work,
