My heart was broken when........

NUCCIZ_BOAS May 16, 2008 11:56 AM

The litter of Sunglow Arabesques I've been waiting so IMPATIENTLY for TWO years now..... came out looking like this......

I knew something was wrong. This is the first female I have ever had do everything according to textbook. She had a pre-ovulation swell, "football" ovulation, 17 days later she shed, then 2 months later had a mid-gestation shed, and 3 weeks before her due date, SLUGS! She never quite swelled up the way I thought she should have, I knew something was up.....

And as you can probably see, she was ready to defend them with her life. She was NOT a happy camper.... Looks like she'll have this year off and I can try again fall 2009..... What a HUGE dissapointment. I still have a litter of sunglows coming July 27th, hopefully I have more luck with that one, she's only on day 33 POS and she's as fat as my friggin' thigh. a big pre-breeding weight 26lb girl. Hopefully that litter will be nice. Here she is-

and them in action-

Sorry to hear about your litter. It always sucks and never gets easier to see something you have invested so much time into end up like this. I always say boa breeding is a very humbleing experience where persistence is the virtue. Ultimately if you stick with it you will hopefully get the results you want. Best of luck with your other litter.

That's the pits! I've seen that more than once myself this year. It's always yucky!

I posted a questioning thread a couple days ago about mine... my Hog female left me ONE slug. I had thought she didn't take at all and when I came home to find this...

I had hoped for more to follow at least, a live baby perhaps... but nope. Just this one lonely slug that she also defended valiantly and attempted to bring to life by pushing around with her head. It was really a downer... so I feel your pain, although I wasn't expecting sunglow arabs... that is a litter I would someday like to get myself..
Good luck on your remaining expected moms!

I do feel your pain. Last year all i got was 6 eggs from my hog and when i found her she was rolling her head all over on them to try to revive them. This was my first experience trying to breed boas. I sat and watched for half an hour as she poked and rubbed. It was really sad actually. better luck next time - both of you

I think I saw your reply to my earlier thread... that is really hard to see... well, for me it was and obviously for you too.
My very first breeding was a male anery to an 8ft adoption I saved. She has had 3 litters in four years and each one was 'bad'. I saved one baby from the first litter with 35 premies dead, next two litters were mostly slugs, stills and premies. I have had successful litters since then with other females and males and am no longer concerned that it was my husbandry... she is the only female that has ever given me premies or stills. Slugs are unfortunate, but has little or nothing to do with husbandry... so I think that female will remain a pet.
Anyway, I know how horrible it is to see and how hard it is, especially when it is your first litter. Hopefully you will have better luck next year too!

Southernboids May 16, 2008 02:14 PM

I am in the same boat.. sorry to hear about your litter.

I know this is not much but just be glad she was able to get the slugs out on her own.. the next step would have been surgery and that is just adding insult to injury.

I know.. I just had 4 slugs over a year old removed from my Hypo Hog female and that is a project I have 8 years in. Of course this is the ONLY female of that project too.. If she goes.. that is 8 years down the drain.

Better luck to us ALL next year!!!

if you bred the same male to her these past two years try a different male next year
rick kelly had a male hypo that bred a bunch of different females and slugged out . he sold the male to a friend of mine and it did the same thing.

yea, I'll assume you're talking about coreys hypo? Problem here is, yes it was the same male as last year, but last year the female never ovulated, never slugged out, never did anything. So I think her egg follicles just werent ready, or she somehow didnt take. This year she actually ovulated and went through gestation. We'll find out about the male though shortly, the same male bred my 8' het female, and she's HUGE being only less than halfway. She looks like she's going to throw a huge litter. So time will tell.

The arabesque female will probably get this year off, she could probably use it. Besides, my main goal this upcoming season is sunglow motleys. My albino motley is growing.... fast, he'll be more than ready come season.....

voodoomagik May 17, 2008 09:52 PM

I'm SO sorry, man!
I know you've been waiting for this for two years and have been working so hard.
Keep trying. It'll happen.
Maybe a different male?
Has he bred other females that produced babies?
Again, right there with you!

So sorry to hear that this litter was not a success. But considering your positive attitude time will prove some incredible results. Best of luck to you and your future breedings.
