My switch from niles was an easy decision, although it has been a difficult one not to attempt to cheat (do both species).
Basically it started with Mushu, my female salvator. I then picked up a male salvator for a friend who did not want him once I had bought him. So, I ended up with a pair of salvators. After losing my pair of niles I had a pair of salvators waiting to fill that niche in my collection. I had initially planned to do both species but then my nile collection became a casualty in my move to a new state. It was pretty sad too because I had a beautiful metallic blue male and a very high yellow female in addition to a decent looking ornate female and a nice mangrove monitor. All beautiful animals.
After I bought my new house I discovered I actually had less room in it than in my old house. So I chose not to get back into niles and focus mostly on my salvators. I also had a female argus monitor so that was another larger sized species that would need room (working on getting my male up to a good size for breeding). I also have 2 rescue savannahs that take up room. I became impulsive in my desire to work with a smaller species and bought some timors. Niles just do not fit in the mix right now. I hope they do in the future as I do love them. I have been offered at least a dozen niles in the past 2 years or so and have had to pass on all of them. Not an easy thing to do!
I do agree that one of my pleasures working with niles was their temperment. However, Labyrinth, my large male salvator, is much nastier than any nile I have ever kept. Fortunately, that only applies to when he is cornered and caught (when he needs to be removed from Mushu's room so she can lay her eggs in privacy and/or not kill him). Normally, he just flees and hides when he sees me. My niles, except my ornate, always stood their ground. lol. Dragon, the daughter of Mushu and Labyrinth, is much like her father. So, I still get some attitude.
I anticipate having a few more waters in the very near future. Three of them. Not sure of my plans for them yet. I would love to keep all three, but that is probably not going to be feasible. I guess it will depend on whether all three hatch, but the eggs look good.
I doubt I will be able to make Columbus. I live about 425 miles west of where I lived the last time we chatted making Columbus beyond driving distance for a weekend.
