Cream colored snow with siblings!!!

boxienuts May 16, 2008 11:47 PM

I am totally thru the roof right now with excitement and relief!!!
The cream snow had not yet eaten, but today it ate 3 guppies, I guess it decided it was hungry, 4 of its's sibling have not yet ate, the rest have ate twice.
Just in case anybody thought I was just fiddeling with my camera or whatever before, I took some photos of the cream snow with one of its normal siblings.
This snake is clearly a different phenotypical snake, weather or not it is genetic, will have to be proven. At the very least if this snake continues to feed and lives it will be a one of a kind with cream skin and yellow eyes and tongue.
Thanks for sharing, enjoy the photos.
Jeff B.

"Thanks for sharing, enjoy the photos"

Jeff -

You must be excited, since your the one sharing the pictures, we should be thanking you..

How often does this happen? that baby is unique to say the least. I have seen more than one snake (Photos) with 2 heads, but only one garter with cream skin and yellow eyes, and you have that one

I bet you have a set of hen's teeth stashed somewhere don't you?

Regards,
Wayne

Thanks Wayne,
It's the little surprises in life that make it a blast to keep on trucking even on the days when you feel like throwing in the towel, you know what I mean. For me, the 27 babies were a blessing enough, and this snake is just a bonus. Time will tell if this snake amounts to a hill of beans, but I will enjoy the ride either way, every morning now I jump out of bed and the first thing I do is go downstairs to check on the babies; they are my motivation. Of course my wife is still the center of my world but they are a close second. Funny thing is I bred fish for 20 yrs, so happy surprises and new babies is nothing new to me, but these garters are different; they are special and mean a lot to me. But seriously thanks for sharing with me, a couple of my friends keep snakes, but not garters and most of my friends and family really could care less

"most of my friends and family really could care less"

I think we all know that feeling.

How many times have I been laughed at for keeping dekays, I lost count.

Yet most of my neighbors are afraid to come in my house Makes no sense to me...

Jeff,

That's great that it ate for you. Some babies take longer than others to voluntarily eat. Will be interesting to see its color in adulthood.

Scott

boxienuts May 17, 2008 06:40 PM

Yes, thanks Scott for grounding me, I mean that sincerely, in fact my wife has to ground me frequently, it really is too early to tell how this snake will look as an adult. Maybe I'm just a dreamer, maybe it will grow up and look just like the rest, or maybe I will wake up tomorrow and it will be dead, I will have to deal with those harsh realities, but for now I like cloud 9 just fine

Glad to see your pics.I am a newbie, and joined toask questions about a little snake I caught today while mowing.Poor little guy was in the tal grass but I don't set my blades low.

Its cream coloured. i know most of the common snakes in my area, such as garteers, but I have never seen a cream coloured one. It doesn;t have yellow or red eyes though. they are light brown. Its about 9 inches long. Petite in body, not fattish. Smaller head.

Hope you gys can help me figure it out becuaue I want to keep it. Haven;t had a snake since I was 12.

boxienuts May 18, 2008 03:17 PM

Welcome,
If you can take a picture of the garter snake that you found and post it on this forum there are numberous people here who are far more experts than me that will be able to identify what species it is and how to care for it. You won't find garters like the ones that I posted in the wild, they are the result of a combination of the genetic morphs albino and anerythristic, they were selectively breed and thus created by Scott Felzer, I purchased a pair from him raised them up, bred them and the photos are the resulting offspring with an unusual and unexpected cream colored variant. There are many people here with far more experience than myself that can help you, but thanks for looking at my freak

Man,That's a cool lookin' little garter!! I hope he does well, can't wait to see him as an adult. He looks almost translucent, kinda ghostly!lol. Congratulations! Jeff

boxienuts May 18, 2008 03:33 PM

Thanks Jeff, it is ghostly, it's hard to capture on photo but you can see all the organs especially from belly and the eyes are like nobody is home, it's just a total lack of pigment. It is doing very well, yesterday it ate a small rosie, today it ate another rosie. In fact most of them graduated from guppies and ate rosies today, they are now a week old, 21 have ate 4 times and the other 5 have ate 3 times, and they are growing like weeds, of course I have them on cable heat and feeding every other day helps.
I will try to keep you guys posted about this snake on occation, but I will try to refrain from any more posting for a while and stop boring you guys with my own self endulgence, sorry but it's hard not to be proud of my freak, I guess it takes one to now one.

Jeff, please continue with the updates of this little guy! I'm not a regular, but have checked this site several times in the last week or so just to see how this little guy was doing! Glad to hear the baby finally ate

boxienuts May 20, 2008 09:19 AM

Thanks Sly, I will keep you updated, last night that cream snake ate 2 full grown rosies, growing like a weed and still cream and not pink. Funny thing is all the others ate rosies last night, but they would only one not 2, so it went from were I was concerned there was something wrong with that snake to now it's the biggest and best eater in the litter!!! Go figure.

Congrats on a fine and unique snake.I can't wait to see what it looks like a year from now.I love the yellow eyes.

Shannon

boxienuts May 20, 2008 01:40 PM

Thanks Shannon,
Yes, I realize the reality that in a year a lot could change, and this snake could end up a white snake with pinks eyes and tongue, and look just like it's siblings, time will tell. And even if it does end up looking very different as an adult it would not necessarily be an inheritable trait anyway. I will still keep my fingers crossed and make the breeding efforts needed to find those answers out anyway. Worst case senario; I make more gorgeous snows, right?

Good luck,
