THE MONITOR (Kampala, Uganda) 12 May 08 Thief steals deadly snakes in Kenya
Nairobi: A thief broke into cages and stole seven deadly snakes near the Kenyan Rift Valley town of Naivasha, state media reported on Saturday.
Samuel Mwangi, who runs a small-time snake park near Naivasha, about 90 km (55 miles) northwest of the capital Nairobi, said the thief fled with the reptiles overnight Friday.
“The thief made away with three puff adders, three spitting cobras and a Kenyan horn viper at the dead of the night,” Mr Mwangi, a snake-handler, told Kenya News Agency.
“I always thought snakes are man’s worst enemy. How anyone can steal them is unimaginable to me.”
Mr Mwangi, who used to make a livelihood from a few locals who would pay visits to his cages, said he now is having sleepless nights.
“I will endure sleepless nights because I used to make 3,000 shillings (49 dollars) daily, but that is no more.”
