FL Press: Grandfather bitten by snake

May 17, 2008 08:52 PM

WAWS (Jacksonville, Florida) 13 May 08 Grandfather bitten by poisionous snake (Amy Tortolani)
Jacksonville, Fla.: A pygmy rattler was hiding behind Butch Sanetz's grill. When the snake tried to shoot out of the garage, 61-year-old Sanetz tried to grab its head. By the time the snake made it to the stick he was holding, it struck and bit him.
"Once I got stuck I knew I had to get to the hospital quickly. Can't really take a chance on those things. Within 20 minutes, my finger was already really puffy and real stiff so I could not bend it," Sanetz said.
Before Sanetz left for the emergency room, he killed the snake. He knew he had to take the snake with him into the ER so doctors would not give him the wrong anti-venom.
After three days in the hospital, Sanetz was allowed to go home.
So far this year, there have been six reports of bites, which is the same as last year at this time.

So the snake tries to escape and leave his garage, he molests it, gets bitten, and then kills the snake.

I think the story portrayed the wrong one as the victim...

"Before Sanetz left for the emergency room, he killed the snake. He knew he had to take the snake with him into the ER so doctors would not give him the wrong anti-venom."

He obviously didn't know much of anything, or he would have known that there was no need for identifying the snake in order to provide the correct serum.

Of course, he also didn't know any better than to attempt grabbing a pigmy rattler by the head as it was trying to vacate his garage (shouldn't that have solved the problem in the first place?), so I woulnd't put much past this genius.

a snake with a rattle on its tail is slithering away, so why not grab it? What a moron. Why doesn't he slap a cougar while he's at it?

I do see your point. But the fact of the matter is that you could say the same thing about any of us that have kept and handled venomous snakes. I'm guilty. I'm sure that alot of people who don't keep them , and hears that someone who does keep and handle them gets bit, say why don't they go slap a cougar, they are playing with fire and deserve it. I don't think anyone deserves it. I just think that under presure, some people can make a mistake. Enjoy them and be safe guys.
