Savannah Monitor cage plans? DIY

SVdominic May 17, 2008 09:37 PM

Hello!

Although only 3 months old and 5 inches long, I'm dreaming up cage designs for my savannah monitor. I've seen the ProExotics site which is cool, but not much more than that. I have searched and only found barely-there online construction plans.

Does anyone have any advise as to where I can get good blueprints/cage plans? Should I hand my sketch to a carpenter and call it a day?

I'm a big DIY, but I think I need some guidance as I am not the best carpenter. If I can get some general advice in the endeavor, I'd be so grateful!

Thank you in advance for your repsonses

as for cage plans? well a galvanized trough would be ideal, conisdering they're a good size monitor. the troughs come in all sizes, even round ones, depending on how much space you have. check out www.varanus.net, very helpful site with tons of experienced keepers and info. check it out, but for a monitor of that size the bigger the better, I'd say atleast 8' x 4' x 4' to allow for a deep substrate. Cheers

Thank you very much! Unfortunately, i dont know what my SV's parents size, however I'm assuming cage design for the largest. Now I just have to find out where to buy a horse trough in the Philly area

Many thanx!

I'm sorry, Sav's usually get between 3'-4' maybe a lil' bit bigger, sorry for saying otherwise. As for the Galvanized Troughs, you can check home depot , lowes , they might have carry some. I don't know if they have a Behlen Country store in your area. You can always check a livestock company in your area also. Also don't listen to ppl that say you need UVA/UVB, full spectrum lighting, all you need are halogen floods. Check out Pro Exotics site, they usually sponsor this forum, great site to check out, if ya have a question they usually have the answer. Cheers

If you decide to go with a trough go to "Tractor Supply Company" and locate your nearest dealer. www.tractorsupply.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Home_10551_10001

I believe the 8 x 3 metal troughs are going for around $180. They're durable and a lot of people use them for ease of building as well. Their main restrictions is size limitations and appearance. There's a trade off with just about any suitable materials, though.

Have a good one!

My sav is about 3' and his cage is a 8x3x2 stock tank framed in wood. I am planning on building another 4' tall section to give him some vertical stretching room.

BTW, I got my stock tank from a feed store about an hour away. It looked funny hanging out the back of my SUV on the freeway, but it gives him tons of room to move and burrow.
