my babies are all dyeing

matt16 Aug 31, 2003 11:23 AM

hey my female had 25 babies on the 5th most of them seemed to be doing pretty good but in the last week about five died and 3 in the last day. i heat them at night i have them all in their own 1/2 gallon cage with a scrn lid and feed them about 10 crix a day. But they seem to close one eye for a day or two and then since thye cant eat with only one eye open they die. what could be causing them to close their eyes. i only have 16 now and i had 25 to begin with.

I'm not sure if this is the problem, but I would not be heating them at night. It seems like I've read that Jax like at least a 10 degree drop in temperature at night, and they can tolerate even lower temps. What temps are you keeping them at during the day (ambient and basking), and how cool does it get at night where they are? (with and without heating)

I'd also go read all the info that you can get your hands on regarding raising Jax babies. I've heard they can be a bit difficult.

Hope the rest are ok...sorry that you've lost so many.

hey the temps at night around here (socal) are about 56 degrees at night but probally aroun 60 or more since they are inside. Also the daytime temps have been getting in they high 70s.

56 should be fine at night, thats perfect with the 70 in the day. Since you are in socal I assume you have very low humidity, I would mist them more or less constantly, or like a couple hours each day in the morning and evening. They dehydrate very rapidly when they are small and low humidity will actually suck water molecules out of them

They definately need a DROP in temps at night. Do you know if the mom was wild caught or captive bred??
