slacker6848 May 18, 2008 10:54 AM

what's the most common substrate used for boas? i always see pics of what looks like pine shavings, is this what it is? or is pine not so good for them? I also know alot of people use cypress but my real question is going towards the pine chips or is it bad like ceder?
Thanks

The most popular wood substrate for boas is Aspen. It has a nice clean smell and it's not to dusty. You can use pine shavings just make sure that it has NO CEDAR in it! Some companies mix in a little cedar with there pine to give it that fresh cedar smell. The Cedar will look like little red wood shavings for those of you who don't know what it looks like.

And to all those that are going to say pine is no good. I have kept and bred several different species of snake on it for close to 15years with no complications. Rico Walder of Signal Herp kept and bred Dumeril's Boas on it for close twenty five years without any complications! I would however go with the Aspen if you can find it.
