EGGS!!!!

JeffK May 18, 2008 04:42 PM

i came into my reptile room to find my first set of eggs ever. 14 of them. i have perlite that is wet enough that when i touch it it sticks to my hand. is that okay. i am using a hovabator incubator with the fan. all eggs look great. i had no idea that she was pregnant so i am feeding her a lot of crickets dusted and gut loaded. as much as she wants. what should i do now. what should the temps be and what should the humidity be? i want these to hatch and be healthy babies so any help would be great.

Ideal humidity is as close to 100% as possible.

JeffK May 18, 2008 08:02 PM

humidity has moved to 91%

Don't turn the eggs. Place them 1/2 submerged in the substrate. The substrate should be wet enough so that you can just get a little water out of it if you squeeze real hard. Incubate between 83-85. They should be in a container with a few very small ventilation holes 1/8". The fan is a disadvantage as it will dry out your eggs if you're not real careful.

Weren't you saying before you couldn't afford all the dragons you have?

so i need a lid? would they be okay without. i know have a much better job and i have found a place to get 1000 crickets for $8. as far as money is concerned i am well prepared for taking on these little dragons

Yes, they should have lids to hold in and stabilize temps. and humidity.Remember in the wild they are buried under the ground.

JeffK May 19, 2008 01:41 PM

well the humidity is stable and so are the temps. i think im going to keep the lid off. i dont lift the lid i just look through the lid. are there anythings i need to look out for.

this might seem to be a bit of an off question but you do have a male for her right? you know females can lay eggs even if they haven't been with a male, they'll just be unfertile. like chicken eggs you use for breakfast.. seems you'd have known she might be pregnant if you had her with a male. of course, if you've gotten her within the last year, she may still be carrying sperm from before you got her.

JeffK May 18, 2008 09:02 PM

she was with a male before i go her. i havent had her very long so i think she still had some sperm in her.

My 8 year old son has beardies hatching now, last I checked about 10 or so out of 17 hatched so far and hopefully the rest will hatch tonight.

We used a 10 gallon aquarium homemade incubator, the type with a couple inches of water and a water heater used to heat the incubator ..... I like this set up and I have used it many times in the past to cook crocodile eggs, its 100% humidity or at least very close to it. There are plans for these homemade incubators all over the internet and I think it works WAY better than a hovator, you should look into making one.

The temps ranged from 82-85 but mostly at high end of 83 or low end of 84 .... eggs started hatching at day 59

The breeders ... the female is a nice orange/red, and the male is VERY light with lots of bright yellow .... im interested to see how the babies look once I get them out and they start to color up. Anyone have any idea what the color term would be for these babies?
