Ontogenetic Changes

Beaker30 May 19, 2008 08:51 AM

Many thayeri seem to change color as they grow. It is always interesting to take pics of the hatchlings, then look back a year or two later. Here are some from my collection. I hope you find them as interesting as I do.

This girl went from bright orange to buckskin:

This girl went from a brownish orange to more of a rose hue:

This girl wnt from a yellow to a yellow green with stippling:

And this girl transitioned to a lovely dove gray:

Thats why I love thayeri. Not only are the hatchlings a surprise, but they continually surprise you along the way to adulthood. Post some pics of changes if you have them.

I like the larger versions of each, but that last one is a stunner.

I agree with Joe that last one is a looker. The 3rd one is no doormat either.

Here's one of my old favorites. She's about a 1 1/2 yrs old in the lower pic.

Chris,

Thanks for posting that "juvenile" photo of Butterscotch. I'll file that one away for the future. By the way, she appears to be in her pre-egg laying shed right now from her DNA exchange with Lester...Hopefully, something good will happen in the next 2 weeks or so...

We'll see...

Later,
Jim.

I don't know how you have prepared your nesting box but I'd like to post something here. I dont know if you've followed the thread on the main kingsnake page about egg binding.

Although I'm not overly fond of FR's advise or maybe its just his tone when he's trying to make a point, I do agree with him on the nest box. I used a big box with about 6-7 inches of damp peat moss. I also like his advise about keeping it dark. My females would just bury themselves completely when they were ready to lay. I would think that even 8-10 inches of laying substrate would work even better if for the darkness if nothing else. I always intro'd my females to this kind of setup right after they're preshed. DO NOT leave a water bowl in with them.....but do let them drink every day or every other day.

Thanks man...That is the egg laying set-up that I'm using for all of the girls (sterlite shoe box with 1.75 inch hole in top with moist sphagnum). I'll be stopping by a local pet store today for some more sphagnum moss as some of them seem to have mashed theirs down flat.

I'm using a very small water bowl for hydration as I want to to be able to drink every time they're thristy...The bowls are only 2" ID and only 2" deep. I took out their large bowls to prevent temptation...Do both of them have a propensity for laying in water? If so, I'll make an adjustment...

If they're properly hydrated, there shouldn't be a problem but I check them every morning and in the evening...

Sincerely appreciate the advice man...

Later,
Jim.
