AbsoluteApril May 23, 2003 10:27 AM

I call her the Patriotic Phase! Trying to teach her to hiss "Stars and Stripes Forever"

Hope everyone has a nice Memorial Day Weekend!

(the model was the abaresque boa in the Boa Const. Manual)

Just for fun, here's another drawing I was working on, sadly I
did not realize chalk and textured paper do not mix, oh well!

(the model was Lee Barrie's female surinam)

Very cool. Creative!

That's some very fine artwork April. I've been trying to think how you could salvage the Suriname picture. Have you tried lifting the chalk off with a kneadable eraser?

not a bad idea...
I was thinking of using a light-table to trace the design
onto a new paper and then using colored pencils.
Thanks for the tip! (here's hoping!)

Another thought would be to combine the chalk and watercolors. I've done paintings using both (learned in an art class) and found it to work pretty well. Finish the chalk and then wash over with watercolors. Experiment on some other paper first, but you may find it a fun media combo!

I've tinkered with a bit of art now and again and liked playing around with different mediums. You could try to finish the picture with the chalk then brush off the excess chalk/dust with a soft bristled paint brush. It would be paler, possibly even washed out in appearance. But if so, you could just go back over it with colored pencil or pastels (I'd recommend oil pastels personally over their more chalky counterparts) and darken it. If you were to use pastels, use either a setting spray (sold in most art/craft stores) or hairspray to help prevent smudges after the work is complete. Hairspray does work, but test it on something expendable first to be sure. Often mixing the different media produces very nice effects. My sister-in-law mixes watercolors, pencil and some ink on a regular basis - making very nice works. I'm still fond of crayons (that old childhood standby ) and colored pencils, sometimes adding watercolor art pens as well. I'm soon planning to start playing with watercolors as well as oil paints, just to experiment and stretch the muse.
