frustrated with myself

medyssa May 19, 2008 08:07 PM

Well, I lost two babies, I am hoping they are still in my room. But due to a serious lack of checking the container on my part, three of the babies got loose Saturday night. One I found yesterday evening, the other two I have seen no sign of.
I think I just need to stop being so involved in my own projects, because I have noticed I tend to ruin things for myself. Geez!

Jess,
..We are humans and humans make mistakes. We have all had snakes escape. For me it usually happens when I am tired. I try to recognize when I am tired and prone to making mistakes and then take extra steps checking the basic things like cage security before leaving the snake room.

I have lost three snakes in the last 4 years... one a ghost corn and both of my Rainbow boas. The corn snake I never found, but the two rainbows i did.. One I found before I even knew it escaped...came home from work to find an adult BRB in my toilet...turned out it was my male who's cage I did not close properly.

The female i lost while soaking her in the sink...left her alone for about 5 seconds to toss out her soiled bedding..and that was long enough for a 2' snake to vanish. SHe turned up a week later beside the same sink in which i was thawing dinner for my other snakes...I think she crawled down the overflow drain in the sink..and the heat of the water in the sink drove her out, or the smell of dinner thawing attracted her.

I also had a corn snake I thought escaped twice only to discover it was still in his cage. I learned that a yearling corn snake can hide very well in an inch of shaved aspen, even when the aspen is repeatedly moved form one side of the cage to another and all the furniture taken out. Needless to say, I called him Copperfield, after the great Illusionist.

Moral..loosing snakes can happen to all of us, best thing, keep looking. Put food on a heating pad in a dark corner...provide a hide...and water, and hopefully you find it there in the day.

Jailbreak, bummer. At least you've already found one of them. Hope the rest turn up soon. They're probably somewhere real close by and will come out during the night.

Like others have stated, we ALL have escapees from time to time, my latest one was caught in the act of pulling a houdini, escaping from a partially locked cage...

The one prior to that was another houdini... escaped from a Boaphile 421Condo. It has four doors, each with a keylock. I had left the key in the lock, Dottie must have rubbed accross the latch turning it to the open position (she was shedding) and the door popped open. She was found in the tub rack next to her cage stack. For those few seconds I didn't know where she was, I was sweating bullets.

Keep looking, leave out water, and a nice warm damp hide!!!

And most important, learn the lesson, snakes are natural born escape artists. Comes built in with their slender flexible body. Any hole or crack they can work their head through, the body can follow. You have to be dilligent about closing and securely latching ALL cages. Your tub racks need to be tight fitting. Any tub with a snap top lid is an invitation for escape, even placing heavy objects on top is no gauranty.

Oh yeah, if you want them sexed. just let me know.

Best advise I ever got was to look in the coils of the couch... I've found one there, empty the fridge and look under it, and basically any other appliance with a motor. And in my opinion the best one is to set an alarm and get up a couple of times in the middle of the night. If you're ever going to catch them roaming the floor it will be when they think you're sleeping.

I recently had one escape. She was gone for a month. We turned over everything looking for her. We even cut our sewed on cushions in our brand new couch to try to find her (since I found one in the coils before). Every once in a while I'd here something clang in the kitchen and I'd think it was her, but could never find her. One night when I was out of town my boyfriend found her coming out from behind the kitchen cabinets!! Just keep looking, don't give up, don't blame yourself and learn from it!! All the best of luck!
