differences between sexes on Azureus ?

Obeligz Aug 31, 2003 01:38 PM

I know perfectly well how to spot differences between auratuses, which I have a few of left now, but I think it's really hard to find the differences between male and female Azureuses. Can anyone tell me the sure signs of being female or male?! I know something about the toe-pads on the front legs, but I always think they look alike.... please?!

sexing these frogs is pretty easy once you get the hang of it. For me, the easiest way is to go by size and toepads both. Females will have slightly small, more rounded pads than males. Also a female will have a larger undercarriage. The belly on a female will extend a bit further and will be more round. Males will be more slender and their front toepads will tend to flare out and appear to be flat on the ends. I hope this helps.

I am not an expert, but here is what I have read and been told. The toepads on the males front feet will be larger. Almost double the size of the female. Some say females are rounder and fatter.

Here is a quote from Poison Dart Frogs How to keep...
"With the D. azureus the male will have enlarged toe pads. The female D. Azureus will be rounder and larger than the male. The males will be slender and have the ability to call."

Hope that helps a little. I think I might have a pair, and I am waiting to see.

about the toepads, they look exactly alike to me.
About the fatter and thinner part...pardon me, but I bought this pair from a guy I have previously bought Auratuses from, and he had two pairs. I bought one pair, and these Azureuses are the FATTEST frogs I have ever seen. Both their bellies are extremely round. looks like both of them have been drinking beer for 50 years.... I don't know if this fatness is good for them, but they seem to be happy and don't have any spesific problems hopping around. I will check out the toepads once again though... but on my three smaller Azureuses I still can't see the difference.

I agree on the fat part. Mine are both very fat, but the toepads are very different. The smaller frog has small round topads, but the larger one has larger flat toepads. Though I have had some people say they were both females, and others say they were both males. As of right now I think I have a pair, and just have a huge fat male. We will see over time... Either way they look great in my living room.

I know there call is very quiet, but can you tell when they are calling? What if you are right in front of the tank? Does anyone know, how loud it is, or if you can see there throat bulge out like leucs.

Kyle...yeah, you can see the vocal sac expand. It's not extremely inflated like a pumilio, but it does expand noticeably. Actually seeing the male call is, in my experience, rare. An easy way to sex them during courtship is you'll see the female following the male around and continously stroking his back. In the pairs that I've worked with, the male usually doesn't respond much until right before the laying begins. Could you post some up close shots of both frogs side by side? I'll take a look and give you my $0.02

Ok here are 2 pictures of the one I think may be a male, this frog is very large, and fat, but the toepads are huge compared to my other one.

This is a older picture of the other one, which appears to be a female, and you can see how much smaller the front toepads are:

A local breeder looked at them and thought they might be a pair. I have some close-up lens ordered so I will be able to get closer pictures soon.

yeah, judging by the toepads on that first one, I'd say it is a male. This isn't always true, but the toepads are very whitish on the ends...all of my males have had that characteristic.

Do you agree with the second one being a female?

Is it odd to have a male as fat as that though?

yeah, I'd definitely say that is a female...the toepads are much smaller and more rounded on the edges. I've seen alot of fat males, but most of mine have been somewhat thinner than the females.

The fattness has always been what threw me off, becuase the toepads and size did not seem to match. The larger one is a crazy hunter, attacks anything I put in the tank, thus the fattness. I hope they are a pair, would be cool to have some tads and etc. They are still under a year old so I have some time to wait. My Leucs should start doing something soon. My males calls like mad, but they are also a bit young.

thanks for the input, I hope we all right and I have a pair.
