? about possible hets

Rob Lewis May 20, 2008 12:10 PM

I have been thinking about trying my luck at some possible hets this year and I was wondering if, genetically/statistically speaking, it made any difference whether I purchased the animals from the same clutch/breeder or different clutches/breeders. I know this is a gamble and I need to be sure to purchase from someone I trust, etc. But strictly genetically/statistically, does it make any difference? It seems to me that if the odds of an animal being a het are on a per egg basis that it really should make no difference. However, I am a genetics dummy so I could be totally off base. Basically, I guess I am asking: is there a way to maximize my odds? Thanks for your help.

The odds are on a per egg basis. It makes no difference to the odds whether you get two from one clutch or two from different breeders. My opinion is that breeding relatively distantly related animals from different breeders is better than breeding brother x sister.

In my opinion, the best way to maximize your chance to make albinos (for example) is to buy several possible hets and a normal-looking son of an albino. He has to be a heterozygous albino. Mate him to the possible heterozygous females. The worst you will get is 50% probability het albino babies in the first generation. For a recessive mutant gene other than albino, replace "albino" in these sentences with the name of the mutant gene.

Poss hets are fun to work with. I produced a pied last season from a het to a poss het. I would try what Paul stated get a 100% het male and a few poss het females. Have fun and good luck.

It's simple a Poss. Het is nothing more than yes or no for being a Het. Doesn't matter if the smae clutch or not.

If you want to gamble and still win get several Poss. Het females and breed them to a visual male.

In a worse case senario you will get 100% hets from the breedings, if you are lucky you may get a visual on the F1.

Only killer thing is the time to grow the females

Good luck!

breed a poss to a poss ,you may indeed have a het female if the flip of the coin odds make the poss het male a normal and she produced all normals,as most know breed a male visual Homo to the poss and the worst scenario is all 100% het offspring
