Hybrid going off frozed thawed, need advice

dingoblue Aug 31, 2003 02:16 PM

Hey people,

I have a two year old Bullsnake x Black rat snake that is deviating from his feeding behavior.

I purchased him last December, and his feeding response to frozed thawed rodents has been amazing. In early August, he refused frozen rats and mice, but readily accepted live mice.

I've tried following up with a frozen rodent after feeding pre killed, but he turns away and will not eat, even if I leave him in another container overnight, or in his cage.

Does anyone have experience with this behavior, and/or can offer insight regarding this feeding switch?

Thanks,

Neil

Sounds like you got yourself a spoiled brat on your hands. Keep humoring it with live until time to brumate, then give the guy a few months to reconsider his food preference. Once you warm him back up, offer him a frozen thawed rodent (watch your fingers though)

I've seen this quite a bit with rats, corns, and even kings. Once they get a taste for live, sometimes they stubbornly insist on it exclusively. Some will take either, but I've had quite a few snakes over the years become 'spoiled' after I offered live.

Good luck,
dg
