Few question about Aspen

slacker6848 May 21, 2008 06:59 PM

for you guys that line lots of cages, where do you get it in bulk? does home depot sell it? horse feed stores? landscaping stores? lowels? i searched lowels and home depot web sites and found nothing but i haven't gone there yet and emailed a landscaping place and they haven't herd of aspen which surprises me, and i tried a horse feed where we get pine shavings for out stalls and they only have pine and woodmade pellets

also do you guys have any problems feeding on aspen? any draw backs if ingested in small doses while eating?

Thanks
Zack

I have used a little bit of everything over the years and I liked Aspen O.K. but now I am using " ReptiBark " and I have to say that it is choice for me. Here are the benefits of Reptibark: One, I never use chemicals in or around my snakes or my home, I clean with Pure Vinegar and I am able to spot clean the Reptibark with Vinegar and I also once a month, can take it and rinse it out well and bake it in the oven at about 250 degrees and reuse it with no problem. You cannot do that with Aspen. The Reptibark is no doubt more expensive, but it's reusability, makes it in the long run, cheaper. Good stuff.............John J

This is my exact problem I wish I could find
the fine grade Aspen (like AlfaPet Sells) in
bulk.No problems ever with ingestion by mine.

I've herd good things about it and i want to try it but darn it'll be expensive to line my cages, i have 6 72x30x18 cages and 2 38x30x18 cages that i want to line with it and I'm not spending like $100 to just line the cages once, lol newspaper is like 50 cents to line each cage if that, lol, doesn't look as nice but does the job

Thanks
Zack

Petsmart and Pet-Co sells bales for 12 or 13 bucks. Some feed/Agricultural stores also carry it, and if they don't, I'm sure they can find it. Walmart used to sell bales for 6 bucks, but all they carry now is pine and cedar.

Your right about Petco/petsmart bales of Aspen.I
just do not like the quality. Those chips and chunks
don't do it for me.I like the nice fine Aspen. The
reason Aspen works so well for me is the way it drys
up the mess.If you have Boas that tend to crawl
through the mess. You use Paper of any kind. That
mess is all over the entire enclosure. Not so with
Aspen, pretty much a spot clean(most the time) and
your done.

I actually prefer the KayTee Aspen over Sani-Chips or anything finer. Less dust for me, but you'll eventualy find what works best for you.

at Tractor Supply center (TSC) it is only $10.00 for the large bag.

I purchase my bales at feed stores and co-op's you can probably "google" aspen bedding or bulk aspen. I can get a laege bale for about 9 to 11 dollars versus the 7 to 9 dollars for a small bag at pet stores so it pays to buy bulk. if you cant find it contact me and I will get the name brand for you.
Hope this helps.

If you can find Harlans tek-lad laboratory grade aspen in bags that are like 3'x2'x1' bails they are normally 20 bucks or so it is my favorite by far. I will never use anything else

LarM May 22, 2008 03:12 PM

That looks like the grade I like right there! Where
do you find bales of this Harlans Aspen? I did a Google
search ,I'm just curious. Thanks

A google search will find their website easily. I live in so cal and my rat lady sells me the big bags. Harlan makes tons of different bedding, food, and food for the food. If you can find a feed/grain store that sells any harlan product(shouldn't be hard) they can probably special order it for you if they dont have it already
