Double Clutching

WolfenWarrior May 21, 2008 10:58 PM

How common is double clutching in corns? I've heard that double clutching and even triple clutching is common in certain milk species. The reason I ask is that my female sunglow motley has decided to double clutch herself. Her first clutch was perfect, 14 beautiful eggs, and she was showing no signs of being gravid again. She shed, and then two days later laid a slug in her aspen, prompting me to give her a laying box with moist vermiculite. She also laid a slug each of the following two days, both in the aspen. She is finally sitting in the laying box. I'm just curious about why her first clutch could have gone so perfectly by the book, and then this one is going so badly? Is there any chance of the rest of her eggs being good, or is the clutch pretty much doomed?

Triple clutching is uncommon in milksnakes and probably happens less than 1 percent of the time for the milks commonly bred by hobbyists. It's important to consider your sources when obtaining information - there are several good books and breeding snakes out there.

I wasn't really asking about milks, just saying that was something I had heard.

Indeed. But you seemed to be implying that triple clutching was common in milks and therefore could be common in corns. When in fact triple clutching is UNCOMMON in milks and probably even less common in corns.

Not at all my intention.

Indeed. If someone posted here and said "I heard brown cows give chocolate milk, and by the way, what's the record size for a corn snake."

I'd expect someone to step up and say that brown cows giving chocolate milk is a fallacy, even if they didn't answer the corn snake question.

Well even I believe the Care Bear thing, I mean where else would they live? But not the cow thing - I've been to a farm.

Double clutching is extremely common in corns-almost the rule. The reason this clutch is going so badly is that she never got the opportunity to mate again after dropping her first clutch. Infertile eggs are more likely to lead to an egg binding situation, so cross your fingers!

Yikes, yeah, I hope she ends up being okay. I had even considered throwing a male in with her again after her first clutch, but decided not to because she wasn't puting weight on very quick. Thanks for the info.

I've had kings do that - some will and some won't.
I think if you feed them a lot after first clutch they are more likely to try even w/o copulation.
