Rotting Egg???

leo_lover07 May 22, 2008 04:46 PM

I have an egg thats due to hatch any day now but when I checked it a couple days ago the outer shell seemed to be peeling off, thats not really odd to me but underneath it seems to be turning yellow. Now I can visibly see the hatchling inside the egg and it is fertile since it has bright red vessels and a mass of veins in the bottom. Is it heard of for an egg to rot with a hatchling inside. I have pictures posted, what do you guys think is going on with it?

That type of mold appears if it is too humid in your incubator container. What was your water to vermiculite ratio??
I would try to gently wipe it off. Good luck

Well, that's what i thought was happening so I lowered the humidty but nothing. its not mold growing on the outside its the actual color of the egg. ive seen mold on eggs, this isn't outide it appears to be inside. The humidity is actualy a little lower than average because I origianly thought that was the purpose but nope. nothing. any othr ideas???

Well I would only be guessing but my thought is that your female may have a deficiency in calcium. I normally do not have eggs that are so translucent. Most are solid white through the full incubation. What are you dusting with? How often with calcium?
Do you have a successful history with other eggs- from this female, other females?
Finally, how long has the egg been incubating? Has it swollen up any?

I dust with rep-cal everyday and a vitamin once a week. The female has been a successful breeder but this egg just seems to be different. Any ideas???

Nevermind guys, lost the hatchling. The egg collapsed, I think it was due to lack of calcium because it was due to hatch and the baby wasn't fully developed. It was dead and it didn't have an umbilical cord and its mouth was full of fluid. Well, its not a big deal everyone loses one once in a while. I'll just have to be a bit more careful next time, thanks for all you input guys. R.I.P little baby.
