OT: Road Rescue!

natsamjosh May 22, 2008 07:19 PM

I SNAPPED a few pics of this older gentlemen who was sitting in a daze at the edge of a busy road. Been a while since I handled a big snapping turtle, these are awesome animals, very powerful. Good thing I was driving my truck. I relocated him to the lake near my house. He was a load, maybe 35 or 40 lbs.

Anyway, hope everyone has a great Memorial Day weekend!!

Thanks,
Ed

Looks like a decent sized guy. I've never tried to handle one that big, how was his temperment? Most I've seen here would try to take your arm off. Hopefully that one does well for in his home and he learns to stay away from roads.
I think I may have posted these shots before but here are some shots of a few litte snapping turtles that I found a few years back while I was fishing. I've seen some huge adults in those same ponds where these guys came from.

Milo,

I was expecting a Steve Erwin type encounter, but he was a little lethargic and dried out. He opened his mouth as expected, but didn't strike or snap at me. But those claws/legs were powerful, he dug into the ground and didn't want to let go. In hindsight,
I'm thinking I should have kept in for a day or two and attempted to feed him some fresh fish. He reminded me of a sea turtle, since his eyes were watering like a sea turtle laying eggs.

As long as you pick them up from the base of the tail (and obviously hold them away from your body), they can't maim you. Definitely not for the faint of heart, though!

Great pics of those babies! That must have been neat to see.
Nothing cuter than babie turtles. But more importantly, did you catch any fish!?

Thanks,
Ed

Yep I was catching fish. Actually that is the only reason that I saw the turtles. I was fishing in an area where I was always told you couldn't catch bass and was cleaning up so I wanted proof so I walked back to the truck to get the camera. As I was walking down the trail I noticed the dirt moving (like most snake guys I tend to walk with my head down anywhere I might see a reptile), sat down to watch and over about the next half hour about 20 of them came out of the hole.
Anyway here is another pic of one of the turtles I found and a fish from that day and one from the next morning. Unfortunately the bass don't get as big here as they do in places where waters don't freeze but they're fun to catch anyway.

Catching fish AND finding turtles, that's a pretty good day! Nothing better, imo, than catching bass in a small pond/lake on ultra-light tackle. I'll have to dig up some bass pictures now.

Thanks,
Ed

Nice! I'm surprised he's so sedate. I got pretty surprised by one of those guys when it flipped completely around and tried to get me when I was relocating it off of the road. Who knew they were so fast!

Good on ya for helping the beast to a safer locale!

A friend of mine has alligator snappers. They're as big as manhole covers with heads as big as two fists and they eat chickens. Those are some impressive critters.

I found this Snapper today in the drainage ditch in the woods behind my house. It was just medium size with a carapace around 10 inches long. It was trying to bury itslf in the mud in the shallow water. I pulled it out to take a couple PICs and then let it go. Snapping Turtles typically have a triple row of keels on their carapace but many specimens wear them away like this one has.

i rescued one from an off ramp on the NJ state parkway last year and I have two on them here...I have had one my friend caught in a salt march since he was the size of a quarter and he is quite large now 6 years later.
