Milo,
I was expecting a Steve Erwin type encounter, but he was a little lethargic and dried out. He opened his mouth as expected, but didn't strike or snap at me. But those claws/legs were powerful, he dug into the ground and didn't want to let go. In hindsight,
I'm thinking I should have kept in for a day or two and attempted to feed him some fresh fish. He reminded me of a sea turtle, since his eyes were watering like a sea turtle laying eggs.
As long as you pick them up from the base of the tail (and obviously hold them away from your body), they can't maim you. Definitely not for the faint of heart, though!
Great pics of those babies! That must have been neat to see.
Nothing cuter than babie turtles. But more importantly, did you catch any fish!?
Thanks,
Ed
>>Looks like a decent sized guy. I've never tried to handle one that big, how was his temperment? Most I've seen here would try to take your arm off. Hopefully that one does well for in his home and he learns to stay away from roads.
>>I think I may have posted these shots before but here are some shots of a few litte snapping turtles that I found a few years back while I was fishing. I've seen some huge adults in those same ponds where these guys came from.
