I don't know if you'll be able to get any help on sex since most of us (me included) probably couldn't even tell you the species. If I were you, I'd contact someone who knows more about uros than the average joe: Lindsay Pike, Debb luvs uros, Doug Dix, or maybe they can recommend someone outside the U.S. who might have more experience with such species.

U. princeps? At least that was from your post a while back.

Hi Thanks for your reply.

Yes they are U.princeps. But its a shame to have a bunch of them and not know if they all are males or all are females or might be mixed but just look so similar

Thanks for the recommendations. Ill try to contact some of them.

excerpts from taxonomy from Thomas Wilms:
U.princeps O'Shaughnessy1880 U.princeps scortecci Cherchi1954 Pastuer & Bonns1960...Maximum total length is around 27cm...
...lacks femoral pores, however, callous glands are located anteror to the cloaca...species displays pronounced sexual dimorphism. The ground color of the body is olive grey to green with small brown markings. Males have a yellowish red to green dorsum with small, scattered black spots. The venter is yellowish with blue grey marbling in area of the chest and throat. The tail is yellow green or red in color. Females are grey brown dorsally with a red shimer and small black spots. The venter is immaculate white.
also from Wilms book:"lives in rocky stony...plateaus of volcanic origin. Both plant and insect matter are consumed"
"the only reference to keeping U.princeps in captivity is by Strejcek(1995)...primarily herbivorous...occasionally accepted insects...courtship and mating observed in June...latter half of June female visibly gravid.Egg laying followed first week of July. Mating again observed in July and second clutch was produced in the middle of August."
Thought you might like that last part.

Thanks allot for your replies.
I really appreciate it.

I also got the book from Wilms. But there is nothing which so far can really indicate if I have males or females with certainty. Its really twisty.

What type of Uro is that? I've been thinking about getting one, and I really like the look of yours. If possible, post a few more pics of your little guy.. a top view, so I can see his markings.

Thanks!

The second picture is a male and the other two is hard to tell. Picture not clear enough.

mrslate May 23, 2008 11:35 PM

I would think the third one would be male. Looks blue grey around the throat and chest. If the taxonomy is correct. Of course I have absolutely no experience with princeps, so that's all I can base it on. Unless of course there are male mimics!

mrslate May 23, 2008 11:41 PM

And I see a little blue on the first one, plus none look immaculate white ventrally...how big are they?

africansnakes May 25, 2008 07:10 AM

They are all 22 - 23 cm long and I assume adult.
Its driving me crazy.
I will post some better closeups of them today.

africansnakes May 25, 2008 07:59 AM

Here are more closeups in the same order again:

here nr. 2

africansnakes May 25, 2008 08:19 AM

Now this one I would think is a female compared to the others because of lack of bulges.. but then again its the one with the biggest pores and a marbled chest..

africansnakes May 25, 2008 08:48 AM

Well here are all 3 together, nr 3 certainly would look like a female if it werent the one with thelargest pores and the most blue blotches on the belly.

I am not trying to sex your princeps or anything but #3 looks so bulged out it makes the tail look flat.
