Debate question: Female Co-doms

adogunnaike May 23, 2008 11:39 AM

This only applies to females only! I know that this topic would have been much different if males are involved.

Which do you think would be a better investment:buying a super form female or buying her visual codoms sibblings. For example, would it be better to buy a Killer Bee female for 4,000 or 4 bumble bees for 1000 each??? would it be better to buy a black eyed leucistic for 5000 or buy 4 fires for 1250 each. Please remember that this topic applies to future breeding females only?

Me personaly, id rather have 4 co-dom (or double co-dom) females over a super because i have a greater chance at producing more snakes. Of course, now I run the chance at producing a bunch of normals. But, if my one snake (super form) didnt breed/ produced slugs Id be screwed the whole season.

I would think if you were breeding, having more females woud be the way to go.

Essentially - do you want to put all your eggs in one basket? What do you have in mind as males to breed to them? What do you like and what is your ultimate goal?

From the scenario presented I'd take the bumblebees over the killer bee - but I think I'd take the BEL over the fires primarily due to the lack of (my personal) interest in working with fire combos.

Mathmatically you are better off with 4 codoms by a factor of 2.

No doubt...If i were me i would diversify a bit too..I would buy just two of each. Then buy more two females from another two other traits as well(pewters,pastel/ybs,or maybe het pieds or lavenders?)

I'd take the 4 visual hets....

It not only gives you better odds of producing in a year....but also gives you a better potential of multiple different combos.

Meanwhile the homozygous form (super) female would only have the possibility of producing one clutch of eggs...most likely fathered by a single male....meaning only 1 combo clutch.
(although multiple fathered clutches are possible...they are not so commmon.)

If you have a lot of different interesting males....you could potentially produce several combos by using the 4 female visual hets. Better odds....and more morphs to work with in the end.

And add to that the possibility of the super female "slugging out" or just not laying.
Odds are better that you'll get at least one clutch out of 4 co-dom females.

Plus, it'll take a little longer, but once you make yourself a co-dom male, you can go for all the super females you want in the long run.

if you want to make triple or quad morphs, you're going to do a lot better by cutting your odds in half with the supers. kd

in any dom or co-dom clutch there will always be either visuals or siblings.

siblings refer to the brothers/sisters that are normals to the visuals in that clutch, often referred as Sib.

as for super vs. multiple hets, it really depends on what you are trying to do?

supers increases your odds at hitting combos, while decreases your odds of producing. not to include the time needed to wait untill the female is up to size.

hets increases your producing, but decreases your combo chances. with multiple hets you may get a clutch of 1 or 2 out of 4 females due to the fact that snakes grow at different rates ( /- 100g a month if you are lucky) it all depends.

as for me i would get the hets, my saying is you can never have enough females. Yes it takes time but when you are there you will be glad you had them.
