Iguanas and Tortoises?

hauntedgoddess Aug 31, 2003 04:51 PM

I recently had a death in my family, and am now the caretaker for a young iguana. (Getting rid of it is not an option)
Problem is, I dont have much room for another large tank, as I already have a fairly large one to keep my tortoise in (the tortoise is 5 inches)
Is it possible to house an iguana and a tortoise together?
Please help.
Thanks.

No. Also, keep in mind that an adult iguana cannot be kept inside a tank, unless youre shelling out big bucks for zoo/aquarium type tanks. A homeade cage will be best-if you feel you cant take care of this little one (who, should grow between 4-6 feet long, need specific lighting, heating, humidity, etc needs, homeade diet, and is NOT going to be a fido and fluffy cuddley pet) try to find a local rescue or rehome it in a good home. Although, iguanas are the #1 dumped reptile in the US, and most people on this forum have rescued iguanas-it isnt easy to even give them away. My boy was kept in a 55g aquarium for a year and being fed dog food, he has kidney disease and only recently began eating on his own (after 5 months since i got him).

If, you decide to keep the iguana...browse these archives and keep asking lots of questions =o)

This is a little off the subject, but after reading your post Sarah I thought I could ask you..... im in the process of adopting an Ig who has been fed dog food for 7 years and I am anticipating him having Kidney or Liver disease. Do you have any advice since you just went through it with yours???? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

He probably does have kidney disease. Its too common-and preventable, often, with these guys. Kudos for rescuing him and arggg to his old owners. A -LOT- of people here have experience with kidney disease'd iggis. For Zephyr I give him a daily bath-sometimes 2 or 3 on a weekend/summer vacation. I spritz his salad, give all fresh greens/veggies, etc..keep him well hydrated, etc. Zeph is currently on my counter next to a warm sink of water, both bathroom doors closed, he just got a bath in warm water and i also run the shower hot sometimes to keep humidity in. walking into his room is like walking into a wall of hot/humid-ness. he also gets lots of outside time (i am in florida)

Well I guess I will just have to expect he has it and hope he doesn't. Poor baby. Well I hope his owners do the best thing for him and decide to let me have him.... I will know in a week or so. The weekend I drive up to get him, we are going staight to the vet when we get home. I guess his name is Reptar.....funny, I would think they would have named him Rover.
