Some OT - Field Herping (DUW)

waspinator421 May 23, 2008 09:10 PM

Today I went field herping for the first time ever with some friends. We had a blast, and found some neat reptiles.

First critter found was this Ornate Box Turtle.

The next citter, and first snake we found was this big Bullsnake. He wasn't to happy that we visited him, either! He had a large section of tail missing, but he was still gorgeous. This is what I was hoping to see today, and I'm so glad we found one!

I also got a video of him hissing. I'll post it later.

Very soon after the Bullsnake we found this little Hognose. What a cute little guy! He was small enough to sex him as male.

Then we discovered this little 6-Line Race Runner. He was too quick and too deep in the cover for us to catch him, though.

This gorgeous Blue Racer was found next. I'd never seen this species before, and oh man they are pretty!

Later on we found 3 more Blue Racers. Two of them were caught in the act of mating, but quickly slithered down a hole together before a picture could be taken. I didn't actually see them myself, either. But right away we found the 4th Blue Racer, and the prettiest one in my opinion. This one had quite a bit more yellow on the sides.

There were also a variety of non-reptile wildlife that we found. Here are some pictures of them.

Silkworms

A type of Skipper Butterfly

Caterpillar

Flowers

Prickly Pear

And lastly here are some landscape shots of the prairie.

All in all it was a really fun day. The Bullsnake just made my day. I was really hoping we would find one. I love how they hiss! I can't wait until we go herping again soon.

Nice pics. First time field herping? You've been missing out, my favorite part of being a herper is getting out in the field. Those racers are one of my favorite snakes to find all abundant and full of atitude, sure they crap on you but not as bad as garters.

Thanks. Yeah, I know I've been missing out. The only wild reptiles I've ever caught were some Garters around our house in MN when I was growing up, and some Anoles down in FL. This was the first actual field herping trip I've made, and I have to say it definetely won't be the last! The Racers never crapped on us. One musked a little bit, but it wasn't too bad.

That's a great post. That ornate box turtle is one of the best looking that I've ever seen. I caught my first hognoses and yellowbelly racers this year, so I know how cool finding them is.

Still trying to get my first bull though!

Thanks Tim! The turtle was very pretty, I love the orange spots on its legs. Hopefully you'll get your first Bull of the year soon. If you do, please post pictures!

Cool pics Aubrey. Glad you had fun. Im still looking for someone around my area to go herping with. You found more in one day than some folks find in a week. Definitely a good trip.

Hi Aubrey

Nice post. Glad you see that you're able out in the field for the first time and have some success on finding animals (esp. your target species). Nate is right, You were really missing out on this part of the hobby but glad you're giving it a try. As with keeping our CB you will totally get hooked on this aspect of being a herper. Don't hesitate to post more pics after you get back from the field. Thanks for sharing.

BTW, here are some of my finds from past trips.
