Why no goldfish?

tnsnakeman May 24, 2008 03:21 PM

I have been doing as much re-search as possible on raising gators and most of the sources say avoid feeding goldfish. I noticed that most of the people on here say that as well but I haven't been able to find out why. Can someone explain this please? Are fishing bait store minnows ok to feed? I think they are called Tuffies. Thanks for any info.

Also is shrimp ok to feed? I mean store bought saltwater shrimp frozen but still raw. Would they be ok to thaw out and feed to a baby gator in small chunks? Should they be avoided? Thanks alot.

All fish contain thiaminsine which can be harmful in large amounts. Gold fish have high amounts of this. And yes minnows are ok and once again fish should only be part of the diet...

Thanks for the info? Know anything about the shrimp?

Correct, although...it's a little bass-ackwards. Goldfish contain an enzyme called "Thiaminase" which destroys Thiamine (VitaminB1). Many fish contain this, so just minnows doesn't quite cut it. Crappie minnows are safe, although stay away from Bass minnows unless you're completely sure of the species.

Regards,

Chris
