Anyone know about sparrow eggs?

MissHisssss May 25, 2008 02:00 AM

I used to take down all the sparrow nests that were being built in my barn till I got the brain storm to let them go ahead and build them and then I'd take the eggs for the Desert King that I found in my livening room several years ago. She loves them. I started putting some in the refrigerator so they wouldn't spoil as fast, but I'm not sure how long they would stay fresh. Do they smell bad when they go bad or what? Does anyone know?

I assume these are english sparrows as any other would be protected. Why not just leave them in the nests and take as needed, I'm sure that once they start hatching your snake would enjoy the hatchlings as much as the eggs and if your snake will eat f/t you could always freeze extra hatchlings. Just my thoughts. CM

Yeah, they are the English Sparrows.

That's a good idea, thanks. I'll see if she'll eat the baby I took from the nest yesterday. I froze it for her next feeding because it seemed that the parents weren't feeding it after I took out the eggs that hadn't hatched yet. A variety of eggs and babies is a thought too, so I still need to know how long it takes for an egg to go bad and how one can tell when they do.... if anyone knows, I'd appreciate it.

Taken fresh from the source like you are, they would be good for 6 to 8 weeks in a refrigerator.
