Tiny hatchlings

amelcorn Aug 31, 2003 06:03 PM

I have seen a couple of pictures here this season that had very tiny hatchlings, such as the one I have posted here. And was wondering how those babies faired. It took mine about 3 weeks after shedding before it would eat, but has finally had 2 meals. Are these tiny things common or what? I have never had one so small. It was almost half the size of its clutch mates, but diffently has attitude. Think I may keep it to see what comes about. Thanks.

My little one is eating fine, but is growing more slowly than his brothers and sisters. Right now they're about 2 months old, and the little snake has grown less than one inch since hatching, while the normal-sized ones have grown about 3 inches.
But he's eating great, has a great appetite. So I don't know if he just has a fast metabolism and isn't getting enough to eat to put it into growth, or if he's just genetically smaller.
The pic is from 7/18.

We've had our snake just 2 weeks, and we are brand new to this. We haven't yet got a book, and we don't have friends with snakes, we are new to this site/forum... We got the snake after about 3 days thought, but we are very happy we did and are learning everything we can. My husband is already talking about the next one he wants to get.

Anyway....... We knew our snake was small, but we didn't realize it was SO small. I reported on here when we got it that she was around 9" long and I got a reply that said they are difficult to measure and it was probably more likely at least 12" long. Well, we measured her tonight very well, and she IS very close to 9" long. So, does that mean we got a runt?

Not that it really matters, we are already attached and think she's pretty wonderful.

She's eating good, she's had 2 meals here and we're looking forward to seeing her shed.

She also finally has a name that we can all agree on, Ginger.

Some corns are hatched smaller than that. While it is a shade on the small side, it does not mean its a runt. Enjoy your new snake!

I have found that the runts of the litter if you can get them to eat are usually my best eaters. They act like they are tring to make up be being so small.
