Introducing myself & my new dragons

Buffysmom May 26, 2008 10:54 AM

I just got my first beardies & thought I'd introduce them to you all, along with a care question. Here are Jarvis (left) & Missy (right). Jarvis is special needs- he fell last year, breaking his back & both right legs. His previous owner nursed him back & he's living w/o the use of his back legs. Both dragons are about a year old. Missy came to the previous owner w/ a calcium deficiency & has a bit of an "off" jaw as a result.
My question is: Is it OK to leave a dish of mealies in the cage at all times, then feed them their greens fresh daily?

Mealworms are a bad choice. There is a poor shell to meat ratio and Beardies have difficulty digesting the chitin shell.

How big are the dragons? Length and weight if possible. This information would be helpful in making a food suggestion.

In general it's not a good idea. Live food should be dusted with calcium every meal but one a week that should be dusted with a multivitamin. Rep-Cal is the best choice for both. I have read that 90 % of the dusting comes off most insects within 10 minutes. Plus the insects should be well fed to provide the most nutrition possible.

To add to BDLvr's suggestions.. and because you showed a picture with both dragons together (nice looking dragons by the way) I suggest keeping them separate...this will ensure the more active one can get all the food required without competing with the more mobile one.

Thanks, Jonny. It comes from how good he looks. If you remember the episode where that guy could change his face & he was impersonating Mulder? He looks at himself & says "Fox Mulder, you're a good lookin' guy!" Well, "Fox Mulder, you're a good lookin' gecko!"

In response to the earlier inquiry on length & weight, Missy is 96g & Jarvis is 84g. Both are about 5 1/4 inches SVL. As I added in a post further up (from 5/29), it turns out both have MBD...
