todays find

mrtigger May 26, 2008 02:40 PM

I found him today and I think he's a King, about 3ft long maybe. There was another one that slipped into the taller grass beside him and I didn't see him well enough to stick my hands in there....What is this one?

Looks like a Eastern Kingsnake to me.

Yes,....from what little I can see, it looks like an Eastern King to me as well.

thank you, I've had a chance to research too and found that it looks like a Eastern or common King. I am still learning of the non venomous snakes, I am used to only seeing cottonmouths and copperheads. I wish I could have gotton better pics. I was excited to see him.

May I suggest that you also research the water snakes of your area (genus Nerodia). Most people who say they've only seen cottons and/or coppers have no idea that there are harmless water snakes that mimic them. In many places they far outnumber the venomous ones.

These are the cottonmouths and copperheads i'm used to seeing. I do also encounter water snakes that I have pics of. I don't think these are water snakes.

Nope!,....those SURE ain't water snakes!...haha!
