SoCal gopher

One of my clients mom's (he's a dairyman, I'm a dairy vet) found this beaut in her kitchen and gave it to him to release out on the dairy (See, agricultural guys aren't all that bad). He's afraid of snakes so he gave me the pillow case, which I opened up on the nice oat hay stack (after getting some photos) so this guy can eat all the mice he wants and not get run over by a tractor on the fields.
The dairyman asked me what this snake was exactly and all I know is that it's a gopher snake, and I'm guessing not sonoran. Could anyone tell me exactly what species he is?
By the way he was incredibly tame, even out in our 105 degree heat in bakersfield. He was about 3 feet long.

Well. it looks to be a Pacific Gopher(Pituophis c. catenifer), but range maps have the Bakersfield area to be located directly in a known intergrade zone where it could also possibly have some geneflow from other neighboring subspecies as well, namely the San Diego Gopher Snake(annectens).
