Probing

theperfectlestat May 27, 2008 03:24 AM

I've never really had a need to probe my snakes before, since they were all sexed prior to purchase, but after the complete lack of interest in breeding this spring, I think I need to probe the "female". I've been reading up, but I have two questions still.

1. How do you determine what size probe to use?
2. Where would you recommend buying probes appropriate for kignsnakes?

Thanks.

Get someone who knows what they are doing to teach you how - and probe both snakes, it's possible you have two males. I've seen people who pop mistake the two scent glands on the vent for hemi's and thus call a female a male - though usually the mistake is the other way around.

I bought my probe set from big apple herp.
They often are cheaper at shows, though.

I'll probably have to wait until the show in August to have someone teach me. Not a big deal though. The snakes aren't doing anything in the meantime. I'm thinking I do have two males. One of them has such a fat tail, I'd be surprised if he turned out to be a female. Though I'll be the first to admit that I don't know a lot yet, and that isn't a very reliable method.

That's the one I'm pretty sure about. This is the one I'm not sure about.
