Popping question

FatBoyBallPython May 27, 2008 11:22 AM

I have popped plenty of sub-adult ball pythons but am new to dealing with hatchlings. How old does a ball python need to be before attempting to pop to determine sex?

I pop them straight out of the egg. I think most others do too. It's actually easier at this time because as they get older the muscles that control the hemipenes get stronger and it takes a little more effort.

Fat Boys have really big thumbs!! May make it a challenge.

LOL - just hold onto the tip of the tail and roll the tail up around them big ol thumbs - they'll pop right on out. Within the first several days they have no muscle control down there so it really doesn't take much more than that to get them exposed.

baby Balls are indeed one of the best snakes to learn the popping technique on, as they pop so easily.

you can pop them right out of the egg, for sure. but if you want to get some practice, try it on one or two week old babies, it is less stressful : )

check out our FAQ on popping for sex, it includes pics. it can be a bit confusing if you don't have at least one of each sex on hand to compare to, as young hemipenes, especially on baby balls, may not be all that large.

male baby boas have much more pronounced hemipenes.

Robyn,
When I see your name, I always read your posts, they are very insightful and informative. Even if someone is on a rampage you have a calm answer. Thanks for taking the time. Do you make it to Daytona?
