OT, kind of, my weekend

rainbowsrus May 27, 2008 12:37 PM

Almost every boa I know moved South over the weekend. OK, not far South, measured in feet, not miles or even fractions of miles. I finished my new Boa room and moved most of the boa cages and occupants over the weekend. Only ones to stay behind were a stack of boaphile cages with a mix of gravid and non-gravid females, I didn't want to disturb them so left them right where they were!!!
The new room, looking in from the door...

On the left are 6 Melamine cages from Sandmar Industries, used to belong to Barry Berg, I bought his cage collection when he retired from breeding. Straight ahead are the oil filled heater for cool days/nights and a portable AC unit for those hot summer days. Can't really see what's to the right with the door in the way so I'll come back to that later.

This is from in the room directly towards the 6 melamine cages. Also a small rack off to the side but no occupants at this time, just storing tubs. Will have to fix that

This is the area behind the door, two ten high racks designed around the Iris CB110 tubs. I had AP design and manufacture them for me, not listed on their website. Next to those is a stack of blanket box racks, 18 total, also unoccupied at this time.

Hmmmmmm, looks like an empty corner, maybe I could fit a stack of boaphiles there once all the gravid girls drop????

The BRB room underwent a bit of adding and re-arranging as well...

From the doorway, noticable change is the larger melamine cages that went well nto the room are gone, replaced with a two stacks of combo large tub racks with a single cage on top. This allowed me to bring back in the other half of my combo hatchling/workbench.

Thes next two pics show the new CB110 racks (black) and another hatchling rack.

In all, I added 34 BRB cages to the room along with an additional 96 hatchling slots. I also still have that stack of boaphiles with the gravid Boas, once that moves out, I'll have a little room for something else????

Looks like you got everything almost done. Out of curiosity how many hatchling tubs do you have in total? Just curious since you have so many adult breeders. Room looks great by the way.

Sean.

I have 277 hatchling tubs in various racks. I also have another one to two hundred loose tubs I could use in cages if need be. Way back when before I had hatchling racks, I stacked tubs inside cages. PITA but worked. I had over a hundred at one time that way.

It feels sooooo good to be spread out, I was so cramped in the one room only with all the BRB's and BCI's together. As they were growing and taking up larger cage spaces I simply had no more room, even to the point when I started BRB breeding this year, the males gave up their original cages to subadults and had no cage to go back to. With the new setup and all the boas vacating the BRB room, I was able to split up my breeding trio's. Am now in the process of blocking off all the pipes and settling the females into their respective cages to gestate. Stiull have one of my hypo males "hiding" in the pipes and may have to disassemble to get him out. Will give it a day or two to see if I can catch him outside of the pipe.

There's a gorgeous Indigo in the ads. Not that I'm bias or anything.

Great setup, btw, good work. I'm thoroughly impressed. I'm having trouble figuring out how to set up my *second* cage.

Thanks,
Ed

Thanks Ed, but sticking to my two species for now. Will have to enjoy Indigo's through pics of Jack.

There will come a time when you look back on only having two setups!!!! I remember the first cage I built. That was 20 years ago!!!

You'd better stick to your two species. If you add another one or two, you'll have to add onto your house and in San Jose that'll probably mean either no driveway or no back yard!

Great work, Dave! You have two rooms and I have two cages. I may not have as much fun, but it also looks like I don't have nearly as much work!

Still I'm jealous of all the snakes you've got, since I'll probably be forced to stop at four (One more is in the works for my birthday in June ).

Well now with all those additional enclosures to fill I challenge you to keep the holdback's to a minimum!!!

The rooms look GREAT and quite professional as well.

You obviously specialize in Boa species.

You probably should stay away from addition add on species!!!

Did you start with a pair of BRB's and just got addicted ?

I actually started keeping snakes with a normal burm "Annie", A pair of BRB's were my second acquisition. When my wife and I decided it was time to have kids, I didn't want that large of a snake in the house for obvious reasons. Annie was sold and replace with a normal boa "Elvira", that was 19 years ago.

It was a slow addiction at first, I only had a few snakes until 1994 when I picked up ma pair of yearling BRB's "Porky" and "Petunia" And later that same year bought a group, picked out a few keepers "Boo" "Cherry" "It" and "Lefty" the rest were resold. After that was where things really started to pick up speed....

Acquisitions, hold backs and the eventual expansion into BCI's

It really comes down to I was and still am having sooo much fun with this that I wanted to do more!!!!

You are good at what you do and take "special" care of your animals.

It can not be argued that you have a talent and it shows in your snakes and in their upkeep.

You also seem to care about the neonates after they leave the "nest" more so then average

(opinion I gathered from you posting here the way you do)

Plus being handy comes in handy with this hobby.

You also put a lot of time, energy, and dollars into your passion!!!

Just please don't forget the "regular" red and orange phase BRB's

Well your adults are not "regulars".

Don't go all hypos on me.

I am already regretting not getting a neonate from last years breeding's.

The "rooms" are very impressive and so are your snakes.

No, I am not trying to be a friend or a potential customer with benefits from kissing your backside!!!

So, what was that offline request about moving up several spots on the waitlist? JK

Thanks Frank, It's like I said, I'm having so much fun raising and breeding my snakes I want to do more!!

The "regular" BRB's have always been and are planned to always be the cornerstone of my collection/hobby. Of course, like you said, not just your average normals. I have no plans to go all hypo, what about Anery, Pearl, Stripes etc?

If you think last year was good, wait till you see what I have coming out this year!!!!!! Many of my top 2005 holdbacks (stunning crop that year) have buns in the oven. In addition, both bedrock females are gravid again, hoping for more WI-FR and BE-FR babies!!!

Much of what I have done this year with the new room is geared toward this years planned bumper crop....stay tuned for actual results!!!

Gotta run, more 2007 babies shipping out today....
