Herps in Vegas?

crotalusfan May 27, 2008 02:23 PM

So, I just moved to the Las Vegas area, and bought a new camera, and am looking for some good herping spots. I am near Red Rock, so I have been spending some time there, but without much luck. I am from San Diego and spent many many hours photographing snakes in the foothills around my house. I assumed this area would be fairly rich in snakes, but I must be looking in the wrong spots. If anyone out there knows of any good spots, please let me know. Thanks.

Snakes are very difficult to find in Vegas. I've found most of mine road hunting. Coachwhips are the most commonly seen daytime snakes. Valley of Fire has Desert Iguanas and Chuckwallas.

Here's a Patchnose I found in Nelson, NV last year.

Tim, that's a good looking Patchnose. A friend of mine has got one of those and he's got it eating mice!

Where in Nelson did you find that patchnose? Was it while road hunting? I haven't had any luck in that area just yet (just lizards, no snakes yet).

I live just outside of Vegas and I would like to know of some more good areas as well. Just found a mojave rattlesnake out at Red Rock this morning (started a new thread for the photo). I have heard that Eldorado Canyon is also a good place, but haven't had any luck there personally. I've had more luck in Northern Nevada.

Try road hunting at lake mead. Im a biologist at the park (new, about 2 months), and have seen some snakes doing early morning driving. Daytime is awesome for chuckwallas, desert iguanas, collareds, zebra tails, tortoise. Let me know if you are looking for something particular.

I suggest pictures only, and even then being secretive if you dont have ALL the proper permits, as rangers/fish and game patrol southern nevada more than anywhere Ive ever herped...

good luck!

Ben

I'm only planning pics, since my wife would kill me if I brought home any more animals, but are permits necessary for that as well? And if so, where can they be obtained?
