PIC HEAVY:could i still breed??

irishanaconda May 27, 2008 05:59 PM

i have 6 corn snakes right now and was just wondering if i wanted to breed just one pair of them (prob the albino male with a hypo female) if she would produce fertile eggs? i know most would say "if you dont know then dont breed them" but i wanted to try my hand at breeding. i have 7 bearded dragons that i never have breed cause it would require alot more time than breeding snakes and beardies can have way more babbies. i recently bought 6 corns off of a lady who was getting rid of them and there all from kathy love.
here is some pics if yer wondering what they look like

also i have never owned corns before but i have owned prob over a hundred different snakes but i have never ran into such a nippy bunch of snakes. the lady who sold them to me said she was fasting them so when they got settled i fed them each a small mouse and waited 4 days later and fed them another mouse. i hope this will calm them down. i have been bit 2 times in 3 days but it makes my girlfriend not like snakes even more

I suggest not breeding them at all right now...as they are all new to you, they need time to settle into their new home and it is already rather late in the season to start breeding. Also, they don't look full grown yet... how old are the snakes?

As for the nippiness, that has very little to do with hunger, unless your hands smell like prey. Most likely they have not been handled much...if at all.

Feeding them prey once a week is fine...every 4 days is rather too much for corn snakes, typically one appropriately sized prey item every 5-7 days is fine for corn snakes under 3 years old..with adults once every 7-10 days is more than enough. Some adults do best with feedings once every 10-14 days.

Prey size should be about 1-1.5 times the girth of the thickest (empty) part of the snakes body. This is prey girth compared to girth of the snake. The snake should have a noticeable bulge after swallowing prey, but you shouldn't see the scales stretched far apart...if you do, the prey is rather too big...once in awhile a too big prey item is ok, but it can cause problems with some snakes, including death.

Nice group of snakes you have though.

i have 3 books now about corn snakes now lol. the snakes were supposedly 3 or 4 years old now. i dont know how old the pictures are but they range between 2 to 4 feet. i only fed them 4 days apart to catch up and now i will put them on a schedual of once a week every sundays. between building my snake rack and a outdoor pen for my bearded dragons and working 55 hours a week i am damn tierd. ill try to post new pics tonight

Those snakes don't have enough body weight on them to safely breed (in my opinion). They also look a bit on the small side. I'd make sure the females are around 3 feet and fairly thick-bodied. It's a bit late in the year to attempt breeding (though it still could occur), so I'd feed them well and wait until next year.

Those are some very nice looking snakes. That hypo looks especially odd (in a good way) to me.
