Change in beardie's habits- why?

crang11 May 27, 2008 07:19 PM

I have a female beardie- this is my first time with one of these lizards. She is about 13 months old by my best estimate. She was a voracious feeder for quite some time, but about a month ago lost interest in eating crickets. About a month ago she went from eating 20 a day to two a day. Her consumption of veggies has crawled almost to a halt as well, although she will still tear across a room for the very occasional superworm. I understand when they are grown they eat less, but she looks to be loosing weight. I had treated her for parasites earlier this year and her fecal came back clean just a month before her appetite went. Although she went through a lethargic period for a few months she seems hyperactive now- just not interested in eating much. She almost seems to be looking for something, but I am not sure what. She poops just fine too. If not for the weight loss, I wouldnt be concerned, but what is going on?

she could be carrying eggs... is she digging alot?

also, have you given her any probiotics after finishing treating her for parasites? Often the medications kill beneficial gut flora as well as the parasites, and this can make digestion difficult, or cause lack of appetite.

Double check basking temps etc in the cage and change the UVB bulb if its older than 6 months.

she could be carrying eggs as already mentioned. females can produce eggs even if shes never been with a male. they of course wont be fertile. if shes been around a male at all they could be fertile and if you do not want to incubate them, freeze them for a few days. if you feed eggs in her provide a laying bin for her in her cage.

she could also be going into brumation. not normal for this time of year but it could be happening if the temps are off in her cage. but i have had dragons go into brumation at this time of year even though temps are correct. but check all temps to be sure they are correct. make sure she has enough light in her cage as well for her to realize its daytime and turn them off at night. 12 on 12 off is what i usually do.
